The news comes the day after Álvarez's trainer Eddy Reynoso told BoxingScene.com's Lance Pugmire he was expecting Mbilli to serve as Álvarez's next opponent.
Álvarez last fought on Sept. 13, 2025, when he lost to Crawford in a 12-round unanimous decision in Las Vegas.
Mbilli's most recent fight took place on the Álvarez vs. Crawford undercard, when his bout against Lester Martinez ended in a split draw.
That draw allowed Mbilli to retain his interim super middleweight title, which he had originally won with a first-round knockout of Maciej Sulecki in June 2025.
Mbilli was officially recognized as the full super middleweight champion by the WBC in January.
Previous reports had connected Mbilli to a title bout against Hamzah Sheeraz before he was award the vacant title, per ESPN's Andreas Hale.
Mbilli will now get to defend his full title for the first time a two-time undisputed world super middleweight champion.
Álvarez held the undisputed title from 2021 until 2024, when he was stripped of his IBF title for a delay in defending the championship.
He regained his fourth belt with a win over William Scull in May 2025 before losing his world title in last September's fight against Crawford.
It would take more than a victory over Mbilli for Álvarez to reclaim his undisputed title.
