Coco Gauff Vomits on Court, Reacts to Overcoming Illness at Madrid Open in New Video
Coco Gauff was the latest tennis player to fall ill at the Madrid Open, but she overcame throwing up during her third-round match against Sorana Cirstea to advance in the tournament.
"I don't know how I got it done," she said. "Just dealing with a lot of trying to keep my food down. But once I threw up and I was able to throw up again after the first set and then throw up again, I felt a little better. I don't know, it was just a tough match. I think I got the Madrid stomach virus that is going around, and I'm usually someone who doesn't get sick. My luck today just wasn't good."
The American also overcame a first-set loss to advance with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win and will face 13th seed Linda Noskova in the fourth round.
ESPN noted Gauff vomited on the court during Sunday's match but was able to call a medical timeout and eventually overcome the slow start.
Illness has been a problem at the Madrid Open, as Iga Swiatek withdrew during the third set of her third-round match against Ann Li and said Saturday there was a stomach virus impacting the locker room, per ESPN.
What's more, Noskova advanced because of a walkover on Sunday when 20th seed Liudmila Samsonova was not able to take the court for their scheduled third-round match.
Now Noskova will face Gauff assuming everyone remains healthy enough to play.
