Horse to Watch: Chief Wallabee
3 of 3
Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott earned his second Kentucky Derby title with Sovereignty in 2025 and will look to make it two straight with Chief Wallabee at this year's event.
Chief Wallabee, despite getting a late start on the racing season, finished second to Kentucky Derby favorite Commandment in both the Fountain of Youth Stakes and the Florida Derby, positioning him as an underdog worth watching amid a mostly wide-open field.
Trainer Mott said, ""I always believed that a Derby winner had to run as a 2-year-old, but now it's totally different. A lot of horses are coming in with fewer races."
Not only would Mott be a consecutive Derby winner, but so would jockey Junior Avarado, who rode Sovereignty to the finish line a year ago, ending an 0-5 record at the biggest race of the year.
Chief Wallabee has already won a Derby-length race and is a strong, hard-running competitor, like his father, Constitution. He has the ability to power past the race's favorites and pull off the win at Churchill Downs, catapulting himself into the discussion of top horses this racing season.
