Jim Furyk Reportedly to Serve as 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain After Tiger Woods Opts Out
Jim Furyk is returning for a second run as captain of the United States for the 2027 Ryder Cup.
Per Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press, Furyk has been tabbed by the Ryder Cup selection committee to lead the U.S. against the European team at the biennial event.
Tiger Woods, who was in contention for the captaincy, removed himself from consideration on April 1 as he seeks professional treatment and prioritizes his mental health in the aftermath of a rollover car crash in Florida last month.
If the PGA of America follows the same timeline as it did for the 2025 Ryder Cup, an official announcement about the U.S. captain will come in July.
Luke Donald was officially named captain for the European team in March.
Furyk previously served as captain of the American team during the 2018 Ryder Cup. The U.S. lost to Europe 17.5 to 10.5, marking the third-worst loss by scoring margin for Team USA in the history of the event.
If Furyk ends up being the choice, he will join Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Davis Love III, Jack Burke Jr., Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead and Tom Watson as the only multiple-time Team USA captains since the Ryder Cup went to the United States vs. Europe format in 1979.
The 2027 Ryder Cup will be held at Adare Manor in Ireland. Team USA hasn't won a Ryder Cup outside of the United States since 1993.
