Garcia slammed his driver into the turf after his tee shot on the second hole, then broke the head off the club after hitting it against a cooler.
Garcia was issued a code of conduct warning by Geoff Yang of the Masters Tournament Rules Committee after the two spoke about the situation.
"[I've been frustrated] through the year," Garcia said after his round. "Yeah, just obviously not super proud of it, but sometimes it happens."
Per Eric Gay of the Associated Press, The Masters was the first event to use the PGA Tour's code-of-conduct policy for competition.
A second violation would result in a two-shot penalty, while a third would lead to a disqualification.
Garcia was previously disqualified from a European Tour event in Saudi Arabia in 2019 for purposely damaging greens during the third round out of frustration.
The 46-year-old Garcia was able to finish his round despite not having a driver. He made par on the second hole but went on to bogey the next two holes. He put up a 75 in the round and finished plus-eight overall.
This year's event marked Garcia's 27th career appearance at The Masters. His lone victory in a major tournament to date was at the 2017 Masters when he defeated Justin Rose in a playoff.
Garcia has only made the cut at Augusta twice since that win. This year was his first time playing all four rounds since 2022.
