McIlroy held a six-shot lead heading into Saturday's third round, but saw his advantage over the rest of the field shrink after carding a 1-over 73. He struggled off the tee and ended up recording three bogeys, four birdies and a double bogey on moving day.
The defending Masters champion's struggles allowed Young to climb up the leaderboard, as he shot a 7-under 65.
Young's score was tied with Scheffler for the best mark in the third round. The world No. 1 golfer didn't record a single bogey on Saturday, as the two-time Masters champion tallied five birdies and one eagle.
Despite McIlroy's shaky outing on Saturday, it isn't difficult to imagine him bouncing back and making history as the fourth player, and first since Tiger Woods, to win back-to-back Masters.
