Scottie Scheffler Discusses Struggles in Masters 2nd Round After Snapping Historic Streak
Scottie Scheffler says he wants to focus on his short game after recording his third career over-par round at Augusta National during Round 2 of the 2026 Masters Tournament.
Scheffler shot a 2-over 74 on Friday, leaving him at even part for the tournament and snapping a historic streak of 11 straight Masters rounds at or below par.
"I would like to hole a few more putts," Scheffler said Friday, per Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News. "I felt like it was rolling nice today, but balls just weren't dropping. Maybe my reads were a little bit off. I felt like I was starting online, could have been speed on a couple of putts, but overall today I felt like I definitely played better than my score."
Scheffler also said he felt the condition of the greens at Augusta National had changed since Thursday, when he opened the tournament with a 2-under 70.
"I was surprised at the greens. I felt like the greens would get firmer as the week went on, but I think they may have saw how difficult it was late in the day yesterday," Scheffler said, per ESPN's Paolo Uggetti. "It felt like they softened them up a bit, but I couldn't imagine them doing that the rest of the weekend."
Scheffler first dropped to even par on the tournament after back-to-back bogeys on holes Nos. 4 and 5, although he evened out his score with birdies at Nos. 8 and 10.
His birdie putt on No. 10 helped him climb back into the top 10 of the Masters leaderboard.
He lost control again on the back nine, however, when he sent balls into water hazards on both par-5 holes to record two more bogies down the stretch.
Scheffler specifically expressed regret about his bogey on No. 13, saying after the round he "just didn't draw it enough" before hitting the water on his second shot.
"Probably my only shot I would rather be able to hit again. Maybe a different decision there," Scheffler said, per the Augusta Chronicle's Doug Stutsman.
This marks the third straight year in which Scheffler has recorded back-to-back bogeys in a Masters round. He ultimately finished his last two tournaments in first and fourth place, respectively.
Friday's round was still just the third time in 26 competitive rounds at Augusta National that Scheffler has finished above par.
Scheffler, who withdrew from last week's Houston Open ahead of the birth of his second child, had marked back-to-back finishes outside the top 20 heading into the Masters.
He will now look to bounce back during Saturday's third round as he continues seeking his third green jacket in five years.
