Scott PolacekApr 9, 2026

There is no shortage of star power in contention through Thursday's first round of the 2026 Masters at Augusta National Golf Club.

And the reigning champion is sitting atop the leaderboard.

Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns set the pace at five-under, while headliners such as Scottie Scheffler, Justin Rose, Jason Day, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood are well within striking distance.

All eyes were on McIlroy coming into the tournament with plenty of fans surely wondering whether the reigning champion would play loose and free with the pressure of completing a career Grand Slam no longer on his shoulders.

That is exactly what he did in the opening round.

Despite an inconsistent start that saw him hit just one fairway in the front nine, he battled to an even par through the first seven holes before catching fire. Back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 gave him plenty of momentum, which he built on with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 15.

The end result was a five-under 67, which marked the third time in his career he shot in the 60s in the first round of the Masters.

He was not the only one with a green jacket who impressed Thursday, as Scheffler started off on fire with an eagle on No. 2 and a birdie on No. 3. Yet he settled into more of a steady performance from there during a performance that included pars on 14 of the last 15 holes for a two-under 70.

Burns also eagled the second hole, but he was able to find more birdies the rest of the way than Scheffler. The 29-year-old birdied each of the other three par-five holes on his way to the brilliant 67 and career-best score in the opening round of a Masters.

Thursday wasn't all good news for the notable names, as Bryson DeChambeau had an opening round to forget.

For someone who is known for his power off the tee, posting a bogey on the par-five second was a sign of trouble to come. Even after stabilizing over the next handful of holes, things went off the track when he finished with a triple-bogey seven on the 11th hole thanks to issues in the bunker.

Unfortunately for DeChambeau, he is no stranger to scoring seven on holes in this tournament:

He finished with a four-over 76, while fellow LIV star Jon Rahm also had plenty of trouble of his own on his way to a six-over 78. If either one is going to be a factor over the weekend, it will require quite the turnaround during Friday's second round.

Elsewhere, players such as Day, Rose, Schauffele, Fleetwood and Koepka will be looking to close the gap on McIlroy and Burns while DeChambeau and Rahm are focused on the cut line.
