Lindsey Vonn Weighing Skiing Return After Gruesome Olympic Leg Injury 'Much to My Family's Dismay'
Skiing legend Lindsey Vonn isn't closing the door on a return to competition despite suffering a major leg injury during the 2026 Winter Olympics.
In an interview Tuesday on Today, Vonn said she "can move on" from the sport, having retired once already. But the three-time Olympic medalist added she "never got a final run."
"I don't know the answer to that question because I know I'll be happy if I do ski race again. That's no question," she said about a potential exit. "But I don't know. It might be fun to do one more — one more run. We'll see."
Today's Craig Melvin asked Vonn directly whether she's willing to consider skiing competitively.
"I mean, much to my family's dismay, yes," she said. "I think it's just something that — I mean, I've been, like I said, so isolated and not able to really live life outside of skiing. Like, I'm still kind of trapped in this, like, I didn't have my Olympic dream situation … I need to walk and be out in public and, you know, be living life. And I think that will give me a different perspective. Right now I can't say what the future holds because I can't — my mind can't get there yet."
The 41-year-old has undergone multiple surgeries to address her tibia fracture in Italy. She also required emergency surgery to alleviate compartment syndrome, which put her at risk of losing a portion of her left leg.
Everything was going according to plan during Vonn's comeback. Last December, she became the oldest winner of a World Cup race. Then, she qualified to represent Team USA at the Winter Games and envisioned finishing out the rest of the World Cup season.
Even if she failed to medal at the 2026 Olympics, getting through the Games healthy would've afforded Vonn to have a proper send-off on the World Cup circuit.
Instead, she was potentially denied that opportunity.
Given both her age and the severity of her injury, it's difficult to picture her ever racing again. That's obviously not going to stop her from trying.
