Fred Hoiberg Takes Blame for Nebraska's Critical Error in Loss to Iowa on Video in March Madness

Nebraska's season ended with an upset loss to Iowa in the Sweet 16 on Thursday after a coaching miscue from the Cornhuskers.

After Nebraska put just four players on the court in the final minute of the game, Fred Hoiberg took ownership.

"Put that one on me," he told reporters. "It was a miscommunication and I'm the head coach, so put that one on me."

He added that he wasn't sure whether officials were supposed to stop the game if a team didn't have five players on the floor.

"I've never been in a situation like that," Hoiberg said. "I know they always count to make sure there's not six, I don't know the rule on that with four."

Nebraska's Braden Frager hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to three points with just under a minute to go. The Huskers then took a timeout and made substitutions, but had just four players take the court.

Nebraska's Rienk Mast was running towards the scorers' table to check in, but it was too late since the ball was already being inbounded. Alvaro Folgueiras was wide open on the other end of the court, and he sank a layup and the and-one free throw to put Iowa up by six points.

With a somewhat comfortable lead with less than a minute to go, the Hawkeyes were able to close it out down the stretch. It marked Iowa's third win over a lower seed this tournament, as it beat No. 8 Clemson in the first round and upset No. 1 Florida in the second round.

The Hawkeyes will face No. 3 Illinois in the Elite Eight on Saturday. It marks Iowa's first trip to the Elite Eight since 1987.

While the end of Nebraska's season was nothing short of disappointing, the campaign will be remembered as a historic one. Coming into the tournament, the Huskers were the only power conference team to have never won an NCAA tournament game, but they managed to get the monkey off their backs and advance to the Sweet 16.

Now, Nebraska will shift focus to the offseason as it looks to keep the momentum from a strong season alive.
