College Football Teams Having the Most Success on the 2027 Recruiting Trail

Brad ShepardMar 19, 2026

Spring practice has kicked off all over the country, but it's not uncommon to see coaches leading drills one moment and yakking with a recruit the next minute.

Recruiting never sleeps, and this time of year, there are plenty of programs that already have a bunch of quality playmakers in the fold for the 2027 class. Even though decommitments, flips and rethinking decisions happen all the time, if you're off to a good start this time of year, the chances are, you're going to put together a good group.

So, which programs are looking strong for '27 already?

Well, right now, it's the Oklahoma Sooners and everybody else. But there are plenty others clustered behind Brent Venables' team. From perennial contenders to some programs looking to join them, who has the top living room warriors right now?

Let's take a look.

Georgia Bulldogs

2025 SEC Championship - Georgia v Alabama

It's never a surprise to see coach Kirby Smart's team at or near the top of the recruiting rankings – no matter what time of year.

As a matter of fact, if the Georgia Bulldogs aren't in the mix, something's wrong. Smart is one of the nation's best at convincing recruits to come to Athens, and the Red & Black is a national brand.

The '27 group of early pledges for the Dawgs is no different. UGA already has two 5-star pledges, led by all-world running back Kemon Spell of Pennsylvania. Cornerback Donte Wright is a long, elite defender from California, who is set to head across the country, too.

A couple of other 4-star prospects are among Georgia's six early pledges, and this is the early stages of what could be a big haul for Smart. Right now, the Dawgs are ranked sixth on the 247Sports composite rankings, and they're nowhere near done.

Louisville Cardinals

It's certainly not ordinary to see the Louisville Cardinals at the top of the recruiting rankings, but coach Jeff Brohm is off to a torrid start to the '27 class.

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, the ACC middle-of-the-pack program is looking like it's going to piece together a group of recruits that could contend for the top of that conference, coming in seventh in the team rankings.

Right now, the Cardinals' seven pledges are among the nation's best, and that's by the strength of four 4-star commits. All those guys are among the nation's top 320 players, led by star cornerback Allen Evans, right in town at powerhouse Trinity High School.

Jumbo tight end D'Angelo White looks like an elite find at the position at 6'6", 245 pounds, and wide receiver Chuck Alexander is a terrific early commit, too. Athlete Jordan Haskins projects to a cornerback or safety on the next level.

There are quality playmakers on both sides of the ball among the seven early pledges.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

2025 SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl - Nebraska v Utah

There is perhaps no program in the nation whose fans are more starved for a winner than the Nebraska Cornhuskers, a long-dormant powerhouse that has to be wondering if it will ever crawl back into the national picture.

The Matt Rhule era hasn't gone as planned, but at least it's been better than Scott Frost's, and the school is proving it's committed to recruiting through the portal. The '27 class looks like things could be turning in high school recruiting, too.

Currently, the Huskers are ranked ninth nationally with three 4-star prospects among their six early commitments.

Elite safety Tory Pittman III could have committed to anywhere in the nation, but the Omaha athlete is staying home – a massive win for the Cornhuskers. As big a pledge as Pittman is, though, he may not be the biggest.

That could be star quarterback Trae Taylor – who is also from Omaha but a different school than Pittman. The nation's fifth-rated signal-caller is a terrific athlete who could spell a big future for Big Red.

There are other quality players, too, but the Pittman-Taylor duo is special.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: AUG 31 Notre Dame at Miami

Marcus Freeman's recruiting acumen has been evident ever since he took over at Notre Dame, and he's always going to get off to a great start because he connects so well with recruits.

Every year, the Fighting Irish is getting better at closing out the stronger classes, too, decreasing the decommitments.

Yet again this year, the Irish have a top-tier start, currently sitting fourth in the recruiting rankings. Three of those commits are among the top-100 players in the nation, and Freeman continues to bring in waves of elite defensive backs.

The cornerback duo of Xavier Hasan and Ace Alston have to be watching what Leonard Moore is doing in South Bend and think they can come in and get on the field early like he did. Safety Khalil Taylor has elite potential, too.

Notre Dame also always churns out great offensive linemen, and James Halter could be the next one.

The coolest thing about this class is the seven Notre Dame pledges hail from six different states. Freeman can carry that Irish brand everywhere and come back with commits.

Ohio State Buckeyes

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 06 Big Ten Championship Game Indiana vs Ohio State

Much like Georgia, when you see Ryan Day's Ohio State Buckeyes at the top of the recruiting rankings, you've got one thought:

Ho hum. Rinse, repeat.

The Buckeyes are always going to be near the top of the on-field rankings and the recruiting rankings. They're a legit powerhouse, and it appears they always will be.

The '27 class Day is assembling is dynamic and diverse, currently rated third nationally. First of all, 5-star DJ Jacobs is the fourth-rated player in the nation, and Ohio State plucked him from the Atlanta area, from under Georgia's nose.

Stud receiver Jamier Brown is from nearby Sunbury, and the pass-catcher has the chops to carry on the tradition of the Buckeyes bringing int elite receivers every year.

Five 4-stars also outfit the class, and bookend tackles Kellen Wymer and Brody McNeel could open up a lot of holes in the future. Quarterback Brady Edmunds is a sleeper who could surge up the rankings, too.

Really, this is just a great start to a class.

Oklahoma Sooners

6 of 12
2025 College Football Playoff First Round Game - Alabama v Oklahoma

All the other teams have nice words said about them and are putting together pretty strong classes.

None is Oklahoma. What coach Brent Venables is doing right now is a step ahead of everybody else for the '27 class. The Sooners have an unbelievable 19 commitments right now, and nobody else is even close to the top-ranked group of commits.

But it isn't just quantity. The quality is off-the-charts, as well.

Offensive tackles Cooper Hackett and Kaeden Penny are both 5-star prospects, as is elite linebacker Cooper Witten, the son of NFL Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten, who is OU's new tight ends coach. Witten will play next to Taven Epps in the future.

Nine other 4-star prospects already are in the fold for the Sooners, including quality players on both sides of the ball like quarterback Jamison Roberts, receiver Demare Dezeurn, tight end Seneca Driver and running back Keldrid Ben.

Top-to-bottom, it's going to be difficult for anybody to overtake OU.

Oregon Ducks

7 of 12
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 01 College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl Oregon vs Texas Tech

You may not be able to quite say "Dan Lanning gets who he wants," but the young, fiery Oregon coach certainly gets his share of top-shelf prospects and transfer portal stars.

The Ducks are building a powerhouse in Eugene, and it's just a matter of time before they break through with a national championship. The 2027 class is off to a very strong start, and if things wind up as good on the football field as expected this year, it really could take off.

Oregon currently has the nation's eighth-ranked class with four 4-stars among their six commitments.

There's nothing flashy about the class with just one top-100 prospect, but it's a nice core, led by defensive lineman Zane Rowe from football factory Denton Guyer (Texas) High School. California offensive tackle Drew Fielder and Alabama edge-rusher Cameron Pritchett are strong wins, too.

Texas running back CaDarius McMiller may be one of the most underrated players in the nation, and he is going to surge up the rankings this year.

It's going to be another strong haul for Lanning.

Texas Longhorns

8 of 12
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: OCT 11 Allstate Red River Rivalry Oklahoma vs Texas

If you don't care for Texas teams on lists like this, well, you'd better just skip the next few slides. The reality is money talks in the Lone Star State, and they love their football.

They'll spend big, and recruiting is never going to be unhealthy.

That's certainly the case in Austin with coach Steve Sarkisian at the helm. The Texas Longhorns went big in the transfer portal, and they're also going after some big fish in the recruiting world.

While there are other teams with better starts out there from a depth of talent perspective, the Horns do have a couple of quality pledges among their six early commits in an 11th-ranked class. The leader of the bunch is New Orleans wide receiver Easton Royal, who is the nation's ninth-ranked overall player.

Of course you know LSU is going to try to steal Royal and keep him at home, but right now, he's locked in with the 'Horns.

Edge-rusher Cameron Hall of nearby Arlington is another quality commit, and don't sleep on Ty Knutson, just because he's the nation's No. 35-rated quarterback. He recently showed out at a Rivals camp, and there are a lot of things to like about his game.

Texas A&M Aggies

9 of 12
Texas A&M v LSU

Oklahoma has surged way, way out front of everybody else in the 2027 recruiting world, but a distant second is the Texas A&M Aggies.

Don't discount their class. This is exactly the kind of recruiting start that could wind up with a No. 1 overall ranking. The Aggies currently sit second with a stellar start.

Recruiting is a marathon, and coach Mike Elko is always going to bring in an upper-caliber class to College Station. There's only a certain amount the Sooners can bring in, and the top part of the Aggies' class is just as good as OU's with three 5-stars.

Dynamic safety Kamarui Dorsey is the nation's No. 1 safety coming in from Hampton, Georgia, and cornerback Raylaun Henry is making the trip from Baltimore to Texas. Pair those two with another 5-star safety – Waxahachie, Texas's JayQuan Snell – and the Aggies will have the nation's top DB class locked up if they all sign.

Defensive lineman Myels Smith rounds out a group of four prospects rated in the top-50 who are set on Texas A&M as of now. DL Elijah Patmon, OT Kaeden Scott and edge-rusher Kaden McCarty are all great-looking prospects.

Athletic quarterback Jayce Johnson is another explosive playmaker who could surge up rankings.

This is going to be among the nation's best classes if not THE best when it's all said and done.

Texas Tech Red Raiders

10 of 12
Texas Tech v Arizona State

Everybody talks about Texas Tech's portal prowess, and for good reason. The Red Raiders have kind of taken the college football world by storm as the new-age blueprint for building a contender.

But don't discount the high school recruiting from Joey McGuire, either. The legendary Texas high school coach is using his connections to bring in better classes than they ever have in Lubbock, and the '26 class was rated 14th overall with a pair of 5-stars.

They're back in the mix for a top class again, currently ranked 10th overall with five commitments, led by 5-star jumbo athlete Jalen Brewster, who is a 6'3", 302-pound potential immediate-impact player along the defensive front and the top-rated player in the nation.

Palestine, Texas, quarterback Kavian Bryant absolutely has the upside to wind up the nation's top-ranked signal-caller (he's fourth now), and receiver Benny Easter, Jr., is a great, early pickup, too, as is D-lineman K'Adrian Redmond.

They love their football in Lubbock, and the Red Raiders aren't going anywhere. They're stockpiling talent, young and old.

USC Trojans

11 of 12
USC spring football practice at Howard Jones/Brian Kennedy Fields.

Lincoln Riley's seat may not be hot in Los Angeles, but it's certainly no given that he's the long-term answer at USC. The Trojans want to be back in the blue-blood mix, and the recent move to the Big Ten hasn't been easy.

It's involved a major culture change, a roster flip to get bigger and tougher, and a program commitment to investing into better players in high school and transfer portal recruiting.

USC is trying to build for the long haul, as evidenced by this past cycle's top-rated class, thanks to some exceptional work by Riley to bring in star prospects from all over the nation.

The 2027 class is off to another excellent start, as the Trojans are currently ranked 12th nationally. They may be the lowest-rated on this list, but the makeup of the early group of five pledges is very nice.

Honor Fa'alave-Johnson is one of the top overall playmakers in the nation, a 5-star athlete who may be ranked 16th overall but has the potential to be a top-five player. He likely will play safety at USC, but he is athletic enough to be dominant with the ball in his hands.

Teaming him with Aaryn Washington could give the Trojans a dynamic defensive back duo for years to come.

Receivers Quentin Hale and Eli Woodard are a potentially explosive 1-2 punch on the perimeter, too.

Riley is becoming a recruiting force again after some really bad classes, and if the Trojans can hit on a few of these guys as early contributors, they could surge up the Big Ten standings.

Washington Huskies

12 of 12
LA Bowl in Inglewood, CA

Another team you really don't expect to see at the top of the recruiting rankings at any time that's currently up there in the '27 cycle is the Washington Huskies.

Now, they've got some work to do in order to stay up there, with much of the reason they're currently holding down the No. 5 spot due to quantity of commitments (nine).

This is no slight to the group of players Jedd Fisch has lured to Seattle. Two of the nine are 4-star prospects, and some of the seven 3-stars have really high upsides, but the Huskies are going to need some more star power to stay strong.

Receiver Braylon Pope is a Washington product and a top-200 prospect locked in with the Dawgs right now, and running back Jeremy Adeyanju has had a relationship with Fisch dating back to his Arizona days, and that's the reason the Glendale product appears heading for U-Dub.

Receiver Zerek Sidney is a nice-looking prospect, and the linebacker trio of twin brothers Justin and Ethan Coach and Isaiah Leilua are defensive stalwarts. Don't forget about Matamatagi Uiagalelei, who isn't nearly as highly rated as his quarterback brother DJ or defensive end brother Matayo, but he could be a great player, too.

Overall, this is a good start with some underrated players in the mix, too.
