Sooners Need Perine Healthy to Win Big 12
Perine had 14 rushing yards against the Wildcats before exiting. Joe Mixon, who will return from a one-game suspension, will receive the majority of the carries if Perine is unable to return to a full workload.
Overshadowed heading into his freshman season by all-everything recruit Mixon, it was Perine who actually emerged as a star. He rushed for 1,713 yards and 21 touchdowns, establishing himself as the clear-cut starter and a potential Heisman candidate in 2014.
He struggled a bit to start his sophomore season, going over the 100-yard mark just once in his first six games. However, Perine returned to form down the stretch, posting a 201-yard outing against Texas Tech and finishing the season with 1,349 rushing yards.
The Sooners are in the midst of their biggest stretch of the season as they try to sneak into the College Football Playoff field. Getting Perine back in the lineup will be vital for those games, which could determine whether any Big 12 squad winds up playing for a national title.
