Watch Mikaela Shiffrin Make History with Record-Tying 8th World Cup Slalom Win in Trending Video
The 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics are in the rearview mirror, but Mikaela Shiffrin is still dominating.
Shiffrin tied her own record with an eighth World Cup slalom win of the season Sunday with a victory at Åre, Sweden, per the Associated Press. She also won eight slaloms during the 2018-19 campaign, which tied the record set by Croatia's Janica Kostelic.
The latest win came by 0.94 seconds over Germany's Emma Aicher, while Switzerland's Wendy Holdener rounded out the podium with a third-place finish.
Shiffrin was already the World Cup record-holder in career slalom and overall wins, and now those respective numbers are 72 and 109 after her most recent triumph.
"That was really amazing," the American said. "I was like pretty nervous, pretty excited, but in the end it was challenging to ski. I pushed really hard. Quite happy to get to the finish, too."
That it was Aicher who finished in second place was notable, as she is in second place in the overall standings and perhaps the only legitimate threat standing in the way of what would be a record-equaling sixth overall title for Shiffrin.
Shiffrin is 140 points ahead with four events remaining. A win at each race is worth 100 points.
"There is still some pushing to do," she said. "Emma is skiing just incredible, in every event. So, I try to stay in fighting spirit. It's the kind of thing that motivates me when we are off the slopes and to keep going with the mood and the attitude. But whenever I'm in the start gate, I just try to have the best skiing I can do."
This comes after Shiffrin prevailed on the sport's biggest stage with a gold medal in the women's slalom event at the 2026 Games.
She cruised past the rest of the field to take home her third Olympic gold and fourth overall medal of her illustrious career, but it was also an important bounce-back performance after she did not medal in six events during the 2022 Beijing Games.
Shiffrin finished in 11th place in the giant slalom and fourth place in the team combined in the 2026 Olympics before capturing gold in her best event.
And she added to that record-setting resume Sunday with her latest performance.
