WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reactions and Highlights from August 5
As NXT continues its winding road to Takeover: Brooklyn on August 22, the brand delivered another action-packed episode, exclusively on the WWE Network.
Samoa Joe was in the night's main event, squaring off against Rhyno in a battle of heavyweights. Outside of Kevin Owens, the Man Beast was Joe's toughest opponent to date. Would the former Ring of Honor and TNA Wrestling heavyweight champion be able to thwart the challenge of the Detroit native, or would Rhyno score a huge victory, thus positioning himself for a high-profile match at the next live special?
Bayley looked to earn herself a shot at Sasha Banks' NXT Women's Championship, squaring off against Charlotte. The two popular Divas tore the house down in front of an appreciative audience. Who walked away victorious?
The BroMans, Tyler Breeze and Baron Corbin rounded out the rest of this week's card, as the events that will unfold at Takeover became somewhat clearer.
Find out everything that went down Wednesday night with this look at the winners, grades and results from the August 5 episode.
Bayley vs. Charlotte
1 of 5As she continues her journey to the NXT Women's Championship, Bayley stood across the ring from the woman she considers the best on the roster, Charlotte. Only after beating the second-generation Diva would she feel as though she could seriously challenge for the top prize in women's wrestling.
But would she be able to pick up that elusive victory?
The action was back-and-forth, with each woman gaining the upper hand on numerous occasions.
A spear from Charlotte put Bayley down for two while a top rope hurricanrana netted the lovable Diva a nearfall...and a "this is awesome" chant.
Bayley scored a top rope Bayley-to-Belly suplex for the pinfall victory.
Result
Bayley defeated Charlotte.
Grade
A
Analysis
This was a really strong match that demonstrated the strengths of both women involved. Bayley fought from underneath, cutting off the technically gifted Charlotte and delivering a huge finisher to end the match.
The closing moments proved just how desperate Bayley was to score the win, as she pulled out all stops to beat the woman she respects as much, if not more, than any other.
This was a quality match that proved Bayley is ready to battle Sasha Banks for the NXT Women's Championship at Takeover: Brooklyn.
Baron Corbin in Action
2 of 5
You know the drill by now. Steve Cutler was this week's victim.
Corbin delivered End of Days and picked up another squash match win.
Result
Baron Corbin defeated Steve Cutler.
Grade
F
Analysis
This was what it was: another Corbin squash that did nothing to enhance his character or further any storylines.
Cutler is a jobber and has never been treated as anything but, and thus, the win is meaningless.
Only when Corbin beats someone who fans respect will the victories start mattering.
Tyler Breeze in Action
3 of 5Just weeks before his showdown with the legendary Jushin Thunder Liger, Tyler Breeze squared off with newcomer Aaron Solo.
The match lasted less than one minute and ended when Prince Pretty caught his opponent with the Beauty Shot.
Result
Tyler Breeze defeated Aaron Solo.
Grade
D
Analysis
Like Baron Corbin, Breeze has spent months scoring squash match victories over lesser talent, to the point that the matches are meaningless.
Sure, this put focus on the longstanding developmental star ahead of what will be the biggest match of his career, but it also proved just how little management has for him to do until then.
The Hype Bros vs. Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder
4 of 5
Two teams looking to make waves in the tag team division squared off Wednesday night.
Wilder and Dawson isolated Ryder and worked the former United States champion over before Ryder made the hot tag to his partner. Mojo Rawley exploded into the match.
The former collegiate football star cleared the ring, then held Wilder for the Rough Ryder finisher.
Result
Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley defeated Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson.
Grade
C-
Analysis
Why go to the lengths of putting Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder over the wildly popular team of Enzo Amore and Big Cass last week if the intention was to turn around and job them out to Ryder and Rawley this week?
The heels are a much better team, both from a character and in-ring standpoint, but management seems far more interested in pushing the Hype Bros as the next No. 1 contenders to the tag champions Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake.
That may prove problematic, as fans are more likely to recognize the talent of Dawson and Wilder and turn on teams that continue to beat them going forward.
Samoa Joe vs. Rhyno
5 of 5Two of the top heavyweights in NXT squared off to headline the show when Samoa Joe and Rhyno met one-on-one.
Rhyno scored a huge spinebuster prior to the commercial, taking over control of the bout. Joe, though, would not be denied. He countered the Gore with a big boot but ate a clothesline that cut off his momentum.
The Man Beast climbed the ropes but found himself on the receiving end of an enziguiri kick followed by the Musclebuster.
Joe picked up the pinfall victory in what was his biggest match to date.
Result
Samoa Joe defeated Rhyno.
Grade
C
Analysis
Rhyno and Joe have had much better matches, particularly during their time in TNA.
As a battle of the heavyweights, this was fine. Joe looked strong but continues to lack the spark that would back up all of the hype that accompanied his arrival in NXT.
In fact, if fans had never seen him perform, odds are they do not understand why fans were as excited for his arrival as they were. He has been serviceable but has not delivered that blow-away performance that would warrant all of the praise heaped upon him by wrestling's most hardcore fans.
