Just seconds into her first run at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, Vonn had a brutal crash on Feb. 8. She had to be airlifted to a hospital where she remained for a week before flying back to the United States.
Vonn has undergone multiple surgeries, and she revealed that she suffered a complex tibia fracture, a broken ankle and compartment syndrome in her leg as a result of the crash.
Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Vonn said the compartment syndrome could have resulted in the amputation of her left leg if not treated properly.
Vonn credited Team USA orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tom Hackett with saving her leg, saying, "He filleted it open [and] let it breathe, and he saved me."
The 41-year-old Vonn is among the greatest downhill skiers of all time with 84 World Cup race wins, four World Cup overall titles and three Olympic medals to her credit, including gold in downhill at the 2010 Winter Games.
Vonn retired in 2019 before shockingly returning to the sport in 2024. After winning World Cup downhill races in December 2025 and January 2026, Vonn was poised for an Olympic return.
However, she tore her ACL just over one week before her first scheduled race at the Winter Games.
Despite that, Vonn still decided to compete, but her fifth Olympic appearance was short-lived due to the crash.
