'I Apologize to Absolutely No One,' Erik Spoelstra Defends Bam Adebayo's 83-Point Game for Heat

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra defended Bam Adebayo's historic 83-point performance during a 150-129 win over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.

"I apologize to absolutely no one," Spoelstra said following the game, per Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press. "Period."

While Adebayo already recorded 62 points through three quarters, the Heat started to intentionally foul Wizards players near the end of the blowout win in order for him to receive more scoring opportunities.

His 83 points rank No. 2 on the NBA's single-game scoring leaderboard, only trailing Wilt Chamberlain's record of 100 points that was set in 1962.

Adebayo shot 20-of-43 from the field and 7-of-22 from behind the arc against Washington while compiling nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.

He also hit 36 of his 43 free-throw attempts, representing new NBA single-game records for free throws made and attempted.

Wizards head coach Brian Keefe didn't appear to be a fan of Miami's late tactics to get the ball in Adebayo's hands more often, though.

"They obviously kept him in the game, and there was a lot of foul calls, 16 free throws in the fourth quarter... He still got some free throws 40 feet from the rim," Keefe told reporters after the game. "Can't explain some of those calls, but that's all I've got to say on that."

"In the fourth quarter, it turned into not a real basketball game," he added.

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick also called the last few minutes of the matchup between the Heat and Wizards a "different type of basketball" despite praising Adebayo's game.

Still, Spoelstra isn't interested in issuing any type of apology for allowing Miami's three-time All-Star to put together a career night on Tuesday.

Adebayo is also just the third player in NBA history to score at least 80 points in a single game, joining Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant.
