Lane Kiffin's Ability to Win CFP at LSU Doubted by CFB Coaches, 'He Can Be His Own Worst Enemy'

College football coaches speaking anonymously with The Athletic's Bruce Feldman and Antonio Morales reportedly expressed doubt LSU football coach Lane Kiffin will be able to win a national title in Baton Rouge.

One Big 12 assistant coach told Feldman and Morales that Kiffin "should" win given LSU's resources and money, but they "got the feeling he won't."

"It's Lane. He can be his own worst enemy and has a hard time staying out of his own way. That part ain't changed," the Big 12 assistant coach told Feldman and Morales.

Another assistant coach, this one from a Big Ten program, told Feldman and Morales the new LSU leader "will find a way to get in his own way."

"He's a really good coach, but he will find a way to stir up drama, and you can say that it doesn't affect college kids, but it definitely does — and it also affects coaches," the Big Ten assistant coach said, per Feldman and Morales.

"And it's also the way he got there — we believed you that you were this reformed new man at Ole Miss, but you just showed us that you're still the same old Lane Kiffin, just skinnier and tanner. I think there's a lack of tolerance, so he better be really, really good or it could get loud quick."

Multiples coaches who spoke with The Athletic were actively rooting against Kiffin, according to Feldman and Morales.

When asked by Feldman and Morales if Kiffin would win, an AAC head coach answered, "God, I hope not," while a Mountain West head coach said, "I hope he doesn't."

The Mountain West coach cited Kiffin's departure from Ole Miss ahead of the College Football Playoff last winter when explaining that answer, according to Feldman and Morales.

The question of whether Kiffin would remain with Ole Miss or leave to coach at Florida or LSU became a national news story down the stretch of the 2025 season.

Kiffin ultimately left Ole Miss ahead of the program's first CFP run after publicly stating his request to stay for the playoff had been backed by players but denied by athletic director Keith Carter. Multiple Ole Miss players and Carter later contested aspects of this statement.

Ole Miss ultimately advanced to the semifinal before Pete Golding's team was defeated by Miami in the semifinal.

Controversy over Kiffin's departure hasn't stopped him from bringing in the top transfer class in college football ahead of his first season with LSU.

LSU's incoming class of 2026 is ranked No. 1 overall by 247Sports thanks to the No. 1 transfer ranking and No. 13 recruit ranking in the nation.

Notable incoming players include quarterbacks Sam Leavitt and Husan Longstreet, offensive lineman Jordan Seaton, edge rushers Princewill Umanmielen and Jordan Ross, safety Ty Benefield and wide receivers Eugene Wilson and Jayce Brown, per 247Sports.

LSU went 7-6, the program's worst record since 2021, during Brian Kelly's final season as head coach.

The Tigers will hope Kiffin will be able to build on his success at Ole Miss and his historically strong transfer class in order to take the program back to the playoff next winter.
