Alysa Liu Clarifies How to Pronounce Her Name After Olympic Gold Medal Wins
Figure skater Alysa Liu was one of Team USA's biggest stars in the 2026 Winter Olympics, and it turns out nobody was pronouncing her name correctly.
Speaking with Newsweek (via Charlotte Phillipp of People), the two-time gold medalist said her last name is pronounced "Lee-oh" rather than "Lu," which was used throughout the Winter Games.
Liu also clarified her family says her first name as "Ally-sa."
In keeping with her mentality on the ice, she generally lets all this roll off her shoulders.
"I personally don't care," she added. "[My last name] can be hard to [pronounce]. And I don't expect people to know how to say that."
The 2025 world champion, Liu traveled to Italy with massive expectations. She exceeded them with her incredible performance in the women's singles competition, on top of helping the U.S. win the team event.
The 20-year-old posted a score of 150.20 in the free skate to vault ahead of Japan's Ami Nakai and Kaori Sakamoto.
Liu won't be back to defend her world title. She withdrew from the World Figure Skating Championships, which open March 24 in Prague.
When she does return to competition, broadcasters and fans will be wise to make sure they're using the right pronunciation.
