The Tigers fired Kelly in Oct. 2025 before hiring Kiffin as their new head coach just under two months later.
LSU spent $11 million on its roster from 2021-23 combined before spending $5.5 million on its 2024 roster, eventually paying roughly $18 million for the school's 2025 squad.
The Tigers recorded at least nine wins in each of the three years prior to their 2025 campaign, although they eventually parted ways with Kelly after opening last season with a 5-3 record.
They finished the year with a 7-6 mark, falling to Houston in the Texas Bowl.
LSU brought in Kiffin before the end of the season, luring him away from Ole Miss by handing him a seven-year contract worth $91 million (via Wilson Alexander of NOLA.com).
The Tigers helped influence his decision by reportedly promising that he'd receive NIL and revenue share roster investments of over $25 million.
On3.com's Pete Nakos also reported that multiple college general managers "believe that LSU has the highest payroll in the sport entering the 2026 season."
The Tigers were extremely active in the transfer portal, landing 40 commits. They brought in the No. 1 transfer class in the country during the 2026 cycle, per 247Sports' rankings.
Given LSU's pricey roster, expectations are particularly high for Kiffin as he attempts to help the team contend in the SEC once again.
