History for the United States in Milan
3 of 3
Before the 2026 Olympic Games, the men's and women's hockey teams had never won gold medals in the same year.
The women had captured gold much more recently, winning in 2018 and 1998, but this was clearly the best team the United States had ever taken into the Olympics in women's hockey and may very well have been the best hockey team the country had ever produced, period.
Captained by Hilary Knight, and featuring talent such as Megan Keller, Caroline Harvey, Laila Edwards, and Kendall Coyne Schofield, the team had depth up and down the roster, with any number of players capable of putting the puck in the net.
That Aerin Franklin was the best goalie in the tournament did not hurt matters, either.
Their dramatic, overtime win against the same Canada team they had defeated 5-0 earlier in the Games not only paid off a dominant run to the gold, but also planted the seeds for what would come from the men.
The American men had not captured gold since the improbable win over the Soviet Union in 1980 that spawned movies, books, and Al Michaels' iconic, "do you believe in miracles?!" call.
They did not need miracles to beat Canada in Sunday's gold medal game, just an all-time-great performance from goalie Connor Hellebuyck and a perfectly-timed shot from Jack Hughes that ended the 46-year drought.
That both wins came against Canada, well documented for their hockey excellence, only heightened the significance of the victories.
