History Made in Milan Cortina
Norway shattered the record for most medals and gold medals captured in a single Winter Games with its 41 and 18. It was a dominant and memorable performance from the Norwegians, who dominated cross-country skiing to pick up seven of those gold medals.
Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo became the most decorated athlete at this year's games, making history by winning six gold medals across the six events he competed in. He excelled in singles and team events, delivering one of the greatest performances in Olympic history and making up for one-third of his team's historic gold medal count.
The United States tallied its most gold medals ever, thanks in large part to big-time performances from its most recognizable stars.
It kicked off the games with a gold medal in figure skating, with Evan Bates, Madison Chock, and Ilia Malinin coming through for Team USA.
It continued with Mikaela Shiffrin finally ending her long Olympic drought and capturing a gold stunningly, then saw Alysa Liu put an exclamation point on her comeback from retirement as she skated past Japan's Kaori Sakamoto to claim gold in the women's singles event.
It was the American hockey teams, though, that made the largest headlines.
The women's team, arguably the best hockey squad the country has ever taken into the Olympic Games, capped off a dominant run with a thrilling overtime victory against Canada. Not to be outdone, the men's team, the best of its kind the Americans have produced at the games, earned gold with an upset win over the Canadians, also in overtime.
The wins in hockey and figure skating propelled the Americans past Italy in the medal count, established them firmly in second place, and helped them achieve a historic number of golds.
