The letter closed as follows:
"This story, which has been interrupted twice, is not complete. Not by a long shot. This period is simply a part of our journey. I can't wait to see what next season holds and will treasure the opportunity to put my jersey back on and take the court with Steph, Dray, and the rest of the guys, in front of you all. I'm sure that when I return and hear all of you in unison chant 'WAAAAARRRRRRIIIIORRRSSSSS,' it will push me forward and provide an incredible adrenaline rush. I am the author of my story. I always have been and I always will be. I look forward to you all continuing this journey with me and with us. If you have learned anything about me over our year-plus together, it's that I am never hard to find. I will be back, and I need you back, too. Here's to what's ahead. Go Dubs."
Butler, who turns 37 years old in September, averaged 20.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 38 games this season.
He arrived in town last February after a blockbuster trade with the Miami Heat. Butler's arrival rejuvenated the franchise, which went 23-7 with Butler during the 2024-25 season.
The Warriors then defeated the No. 2 seed Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs and got off to a strong start against the No. 6 seed Minnesota Timberwolves in Round 2 with a Game 1 win. Unfortunately, Stephen Curry suffered a hamstring injury and missed Games 2-5, and the Warriors fell in five games.
This year's Warriors squad certainly had hope with the core of Curry, Draymond Green and Butler starting the season together. However, they've hovered around or just above .500 for the whole season, even with Curry excelling when he's on the court (27.2 PPG).
Curry is currently out with runner's knee, and the Warriors announced Thursday that he'll miss at least five more games (which included the team's 121-110 loss to the Boston Celtics). Overall, it's been a tough and disappointing season for an aging squad dealing with injuries, Butler's ailment being chief among them.
Butler had been the subject of trade rumors before this year's deadline, and the same went for forward Draymond Green. In the end, they are both still in town, and it seems as though the Warriors are rolling with the Curry-Green-Butler combo for the 2026-27 season, the last year all three of them are under contract with Golden State.
In the meantime, the Warriors are fighting to make the playoffs at 29-27, eighth in the Western Conference. They'll host the Denver Nuggets next on Sunday.
