Olympic Figure Skating Results 2026, USA's Alysa Liu Wins Women's Singles Gold
The United States came into the Milano Cortina Games without a gold medal in women's individual figure skating since Sarah Hughes in 2002. But Alysa Liu met the moment.
The United States figure skater dropped a huge 150.2 performance in the women's free skate (226.79 overall), securing the gold medal ahead of the Japanese pair of Kaori Sakamoto (224.90) and Ami Nakai (219.16).
The United States' Amber Glenn was 13th after the short program and ultimately finished fifth following an excellent free skate.
The USA's Isabeau Levito was eighth coming into the day and finished 12th overall.
Liu was the United States' top chance at medaling in this event after the short program, coming into the day in third. She was looking to hold off AIN's Adeliya Petrosian, Japan's Mone Chiba and Anastasiia Gubanova. She did that and then some, posting a massive score.
Coming into the event, three-time world champion Sakamoto was the favorite for gold and placed second in the short program. That put her in excellent position to leapfrog teammate Nakai, who was in first place after the short program, though her 147.67 on Thursday fell short of Liu's massive score.
Petrosian was only fifth after the short program, but with rumors that she had two quads planned for the free skate, she had the chance to easily catapult to the top of the podium if she landed them. She did not land the quad she attempted, however, and ultimately finished sixth.
