Zach BacharFeb 13, 2026

Chris Paul's storied NBA career came to an end on Friday, as he announced his retirement in a statement posted on Instagram.

Paul was waived by the Toronto Raptors earlier on Friday, with the team acquiring him as part of a three-team trade involving the Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets ahead of the deadline. He revealed his initial intention to step away from the sport at the end of the season in Nov. 2025.

The 40-year-old will retire with $408.2 million in career earnings, ranking No. 5 in NBA history.

Paul ends his career with 12 All-Star appearances, 11 All-NBA selections and nine All-Defensive team nods. He was also the 2006 Rookie of the Year and the MVP of the 2013 All-Star Game.

Paul owns career averages of 16.8 points, 9.2 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 37.0 percent from behind the arc.

He ranks No. 2 behind former Utah Jazz point guard John Stockton on the all-time assists and steals lists.

While Paul was never able to capture a championship, he made the playoffs with five different teams throughout his career and made a 2021 NBA Finals appearance as a member of the Phoenix Suns.

He averaged 20.0 points and 8.3 assists per game on 48.4/37.3/85.4 shooting splits across 149 postseason contests.

Paul's 2025-26 campaign didn't go as planned, opening the season with the Clippers.

He averaged just 2.9 points in 14.3 minutes per game while connecting on 32.1 percent of his field goals through 16 appearances before the team sent him home and announced that it would be parting ways with him.

ESPN's Shams Charania later reported that "Paul and his leadership style clashed with" the Clippers and head coach Tyronn Lue, as Lue and the veteran guard weren't on speaking terms for "several weeks" prior to his exit.

Although Paul's final season in the association came to an earlier end than expected, he's still established himself as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history and has the Naismith Hall of Fame in his future.
