Wisconsin HC Luke Fickell Turns Down Contract Extension Amid Struggles in 2025 CFB Season

Scott PolacekFeb 4, 2026

In a move that went against customary practice at Wisconsin, head football coach Luke Fickell did not receive a one-year contract extension from the athletic board Wednesday.

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reported as much and noted Wisconsin annually awards such extensions to maintain their coaches' contracts at their original lengths. Volleyball coach Kelly Sheffield and soccer coaches Paula Wilkins and Neil Jones each received one-year extensions to keep their deals at five years.

Athletic director Chris McIntosh released a statement revealing Fickell "requested" this decision as he remains "completely focused on a successful 2026 campaign."

According to Benjamin Worgull of Sports Illustrated, Fickell became the first Wisconsin coach to not receive such an extension since 2021.

"The University routinely gives extensions to coaches in a sign of solidarity and avoid anything negative that can be used against the program in recruiting," Worgull wrote. "The board has extended more than 60 contracts since 2021."

The statement also said Fickell "continues to have our full support and, as we shared widely at the end of last year, Luke is making the necessary changes in the program, our department is increasing our investment and we are aligned with campus leadership in our commitment to football success."

Things have not gone according to plan for the Badgers during his three seasons as head coach even though he arrived with high expectations after leading Cincinnati to the four-team College Football Playoff as a head coach and winning a CFP national title as a defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

Wisconsin is just 17-21 under Fickell and was an ugly 4-8 in 2025. It also went through back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since 1991 and 1992.

Fickell is staring at a daunting task to return the program to its typical standards in a Big Ten that has produced the last three national titles and figures to once again be formidable in 2026 with Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan and USC all potential CFP contenders.

However, the Badgers miss the Buckeyes, Wolverines, Hoosiers and Ducks on their 2026 schedule, so perhaps they can take advantage of a more manageable slate.

Rittenberg noted McIntosh said in November that Fickell would return with the program planning to increase its overall investment toward infrastructure, staff and roster building.
