Lindsey Vonn Injury Update, Latest News on Star Ahead of 2026 Olympics After Crash

Adam WellsFeb 5, 2026

Lindsey Vonn will compete in the Winter Olympics despite crashing during her downhill run at the World Cup last week, according to CNN's Patrick Sung Cuadrado.

Vonn said that she "completely ruptured" her ACL in the crash, but added she had gone skiing earlier on Tuesday and is "confident" she can compete on Sunday with a brace. On Thursday, she posted a video of herself training as part of her recovery.

Vonn previously announced on Instagram that she had to withdraw from Saturday's super-G race and that she was "doing my best right now" to recover for the Winter Games.

The American star crashed and appeared to be limping after an awkward landing on a jump in Friday's downhill race. She did finish the race slowly and received medical attention on the course before being airlifted to undergo additional testing.

Chris Knight, Vonn's personal head coach, told Andrew Dampf of the Associated Press via text that she is "preparing for Cortina as usual."

Vonn posted a message to her Instagram on Friday after the crash stating that she "injured her left knee" and it is a "very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics," but her "dream is not over" yet.

Friday's downhill event was marred by visibility issues and conditions on the track that resulted in only six participants racing. Vonn was the last member of the group to go before officials canceled the remainder of the event. She was the third skiier who crashed on the course out of the six who attempted to run the downhill.

The timing of the injury is especially difficult because Vonn's first Olympic event is the women's downhill, scheduled for Feb. 8. She officially qualified for the Milan Cortina Games in December, one year after announcing a return to competition following her retirement in 2019.

Vonn could become the oldest alpine skiier to win an Olympic medal if she is able to make the podium. Johan Clarey from France set the record as the oldest alpine skiier to medal at the Olympics when he won silver in the men's downhill at the 2022 Games at 41 years and 30 days old.

A three-time Olympic medalist, Vonn will compete in the Winter Games for the fifth time. She previously represented the U.S. in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2018.

The Milan Cortina Games begin with the opening ceremony on Feb. 6.
