Lindsey Vonn to Undergo Tests on Knee Injury After Crash, 'My Olympic Dream is Not Over'

Adam WellsJan 30, 2026

One week before the start of the 2026 Winter Olympics, Lindsey Vonn suffered a knee injury during a World Cup event in Crans-Montana that required her to be airlifted to a hospital receive medical attention.

Vonn later issued a statement on Instagram, saying she will undergo "further exams" and that she is "discussing the situation with my doctors and team."

Vonn called the injury a "very difficult outcome" but said "my Olympic dream is not over."

Per Graham Dunbar of the Associated Press, Vonn was able to slowly ski to the finish line, stopping a couple of times and clutching at her left knee, after receiving medical attention on the course.

Vonn was then airlifted away by helicopter after briefly going into the medical tent for examination.

Vonn, who was sixth in the women's downhill lineup, was the third racer to crash on the course. Nina Ortlieb of Austria and Marte Monsen of Norway, who went first and third, also crashed.

Alessandro Poggi of Olympics.com noted the jury opted to cancel the remainder of the race, citing low visibility and unsafe conditions stemming from the weather.

France's Romane Miradoli, who went second out of the gate and was able to complete her run, said afterward that the conditions were difficult.

"You can't see," Miradoli said (h/t Dunbar), "and it's bumpy everywhere."

Vonn, who turned 41 on Oct. 18, returned to competitive skiing in November 2024 after formally retiring following the 2019 World Championships. She officially qualified for the 2026 Winter Games in December.

If Vonn is able to compete in the Milano-Cortina Games, it will be her fifth appearance in the Olympics dating back to 2002. She has won three career Olympic medals, including gold in the downhill in 2010.

The women's downhill event at the Olympics is scheduled to be held on Feb. 8.
