Quicken Loans National 2015: Leaderboard Scores and Highlights from Saturday
It was almost like old times entering Saturday's third round of the Quicken Loans National, with Tiger Woods just one stroke off the lead, tied for second place after Friday's play.
A crowded leaderboard saw scores sink even lower while some big days saw new faces pace the pack.
Here is a look at Saturday's action and notable performers along with the updated leaderboard:
The clock stopped turning back as Woods dropped on the leaderboard to a tie for 42nd, reverting to his 2015 form Saturday by shooting a three-over 74 on the day, bringing his score to five under overall.
But it could have been worse.
After Woods went one over on the front nine, disaster struck, starting with a double bogey on the 11th followed by a bogey on the 13th to bring him to four over in the third round.
A pair of consecutive birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 brought him back to two over before a bogey on No. 18. Woods' tee shot on the 16th was almost the shot of the tournament, as the PGA Tour showed his near-hole-in-one:
Troy Merritt, ranked as the 123rd-best golfer in the world, started his Saturday tied for 35th at four under overall. While he isn't normally a household name, a masterful third round that saw him shoot a 10-under 61 rocketed him to a share of first place.
He wasted little time in grabbing the golfing world's attention, birdieing the first five holes and adding another on No. 7 before a bogey on No. 8 somewhat mired an excellent start.
But Merritt was able to refocus and tallied off another four consecutive birdies from No. 12 through No. 15 before adding his last of the day on No. 17.
The PGA Tour showed Merritt's approach on the 15th, which led to his fourth straight birdie:
He is joined by Kevin Chappell, who used a modest four-under to meet Merritt at the top as one of the last golfers of the day.
Chappell was clean for most of his day, recording four birdies on his first 14 holes while finding ways to get out of trouble—like with this shot on No. 13, as shown by the PGA Tour:
He quickly canceled out a small hiccup of a bogey on No. 16 with a birdie on No. 17 to cap off his 67 on the day.
Sitting a stroke behind the co-leaders is a more familiar name, Rickie Fowler, who shot a three-under 68 on Saturday to lower his score to 13 under overall. He was able to maintain his high standing among the leaders despite a somewhat-inconsistent day.
Six birdies on the day would have given Fowler enough to take a two-stroke lead going into the final day, but three bogeys—two of them coming on Nos. 11 and 17—kept him looking up at Chappell and Merritt.
His second birdie of the day, though, stole the show as the PGA Tour looked on:
Merritt is not going to need another career day to close out the Quicken Loans National, but he will have to put up another low score if he wants a chance to win this tournament. A 70, like he shot in the first round, will be nowhere near enough.
For Chappell, he needs to stay consistent. If he continues to navigate the course well and stays clean while recording a score around 66, he will be the champion.
Anything less, though, will not be enough, as there are too many quality golfers, like Fowler, within three strokes of the lead. Expect to see a score around 20 under take home the title.
