France's Starting XI Projection for the 2026 Men's World Cup

Nick AkermanJan 26, 2026

France eased to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in unbeaten form, dominating a qualification group that included Ukraine, Iceland, and Azerbaijan.

Didier Deschamps has arguably the best pool of talent to call on from any of the 48 teams heading to the summer's showcase in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Although his tactics are regularly criticised as cautious, Les Bleus boast the most potent attack and best defence during European qualification.

Deschamps chopped and changed nearly every game, so projecting France's starting XI at the tournament is a difficult exercise. Let's take a look at how that could look:

Goalkeeper: Mike Maignan (Milan)

No real argument here. Mike Maignan was Deschamps' man between the sticks throughout qualification. He's set to step into the shoes of Hugo Lloris on the World Cup stage, the nation's top appearance maker, after a good season so far for club and country.

Paris Saint-Germain's Lucas Chevalier and West Ham United's Alphonse Areola will likely provide back-up, offering a useful combination of quality and experience.

RB: Jules Koundé (Barcelona)

What a wonderful player Jules Koundé has developed into.

The 27-year-old is exactly the type of defender every World Cup squad needs. He's a strong, hard-to-beat right-back who has risen to a leadership position with Barcelona. He adds steel in the middle when France needs to defend the box, and he's trusted with the ball, offering a sharp outlet down the wing.

Koundé's physical attributes are also important in Deschamps' defence, which squeezes opponents narrow and overwhelms them with their strength. Malo Gusto is an excellent alternative from the bench and should bring a lot of energy if needed.

CB: William Saliba (Arsenal)

Niggling injuries have disrupted Saliba's season. However, if he's fit, he's one of the first names on France's teamsheet.

The Arsenal centre-back is arguably part of the best club and international defences on the planet. His passing gets things moving for his teammates. His reading of the game stops opponents' attacks.

It's easy to forget he's just 24 years old, such is the level head on his shoulders.

CB: Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich)

At the time of writing, Dayot Upamecano will be available for free once his contract expires in the summer. Bayern wants to keep him, but the World Cup can be the springboard for players to land a big move.

Whether the defender's future is sorted by then or not, he should be the man to partner Saliba in the heart of Deschamps' backline.

His main competitor, Liverpool's Ibrahima Konaté, has played himself out of a starting berth with a mistake-laden season that could see him leave Anfield much quicker than many expected.

LB: Lucas Digne (Aston Villa)

Out of all four defensive spots, left-back is the one that feels like it's up for grabs.

Lucas Digne and Théo Hernandez both started three games each in qualifying. Both offer attacking threat and quality delivery. Deschamps can also push either forward to move into a back three if the need arises.

Digne perhaps takes the nod due to the level of competition he's faced all season. Aston Villa are one of Arsenal's closest competitors for the Premier League title right now. The team has also performed excellently in the Europa League. Hernandez is working at a much slower rate with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

CM: Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid)

This slot will be down to fitness. Deschamps has championed Camavinga in the past, but has also spoken openly about the player's injuries halting his momentum.

Camavinga is vastly experienced for 23 years old. He's not as exciting a pick as Warren Zaire-Emery, or even Manu Kone, but his calmness on the ball is important to anchoring an outrageous attack.

Deschamps has so many options and combinations to explore here. N'Golo Kanté, Khepren Thuram and Adrien Rabiot will also be under consideration. Camavinga must play regularly in the run up to the competition to fill this role.

CM: Aurélien Tchouaméni (Real Madrid)

A bit like Camavinga, this feels like a boring pick because we know these players so well. Aurelien Tchouaméni was named stand-in captain in October 2024, and he's a vital cog when running at full steam.

Deschamps has relied on Tchouaméni consistently since he broke through, and has often ignored his niggling injury issues to get him in the lineup. The Madrid midfielder has it all and is important to setting the tone on how offensive or defensive Deschamps wants to play.

He's also renowned for stepping up in big matches, as he did against England at the 2022 World Cup.

Attacking Midfield: Rayan Cherki (Manchester City)

This is where the vastness of Deschamps' options really begins to show itself.

Ousmane Dembélé's injury early in the season meant he tried various combinations of players behind Kylian Mbappé at striker. Rayan Cherki in attacking midfield, Michael Olise in attacking midfield or out wide, Hugo Ekitike on the left, Bradley Barcola on either side…it goes on.

Assuming Dembélé is fit, he will definitely start. Cherki's current form makes him an excellent pick for the central attacking midfield spot after scoring nine goals and providing seven assists in a rotational role for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City so far this campaign.

He's great at finding space, keeping hold of the ball, and spraying it wide - exactly what France need given the rest of their attacking talent.

RM: Michael Olise (Bayern Munich)

Michael Olise's step up continues to defy belief.

He was very good at Crystal Palace. He's now one of the best in the world at Bayern. He has 19 goals and 19 assists in 41 starts across club and country so far. Take a second to think about that.

Olise can play anywhere behind the striker, but has spent most of his season working from the right. He's devastating when isolating players and has a gutsiness that often leads to spectacular goals, whether he's assisting them or scoring them.

Deschamps will likely use him to cut inside and add numbers to the opposition's box, where he's proved to be surprisingly deadly.

LM: Ousmane Dembélé (Paris Saint-Germain)

You could absolutely slot Mbappé into this role and push Dembélé to the middle.

Both have been playing up front for their clubs and both are capable of starting on the left. Although, you suspect both are also less effective from there.

Dembélé is still working his way to full fitness after multiple injuries this season. The Ballon d'Or winner has scored three in three starts and has immediately added life to a PSG team that are a step below their Champions League-winning form of last year.

Deschamps is likely to deploy Dembélé in a way that actually sees him rotating with Mbappé during matches. The PSG star is a better crosser from wide than his teammate, so may well begin in that position.

CF: Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid)

A big question for Deschamps to answer when choosing who starts up front is: Which player is most wasted out on the wing? To me, Kylian Mbappé's nose is more put out of joint by pushing him wide.

The Madrid striker matched Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 59 goals in a calendar year for Los Blancos. At the time of writing, he is well clear as the top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League. There's no need to disrupt that by changing his position, especially as Dembele's already suffering through a stop-start year.

It's very likely Mbappé is in the running for the Golden Boot once the tournament arrives. In truth, France should at least make their third final in a row, if not win the whole thing.
