Jason Thompson to Warriors for Gerald Wallace: Trade Details and Reaction
The Jason Thompson era lasted roughly a month for the Philadelphia 76ers. The Golden State Warriors announced Friday that they acquired Thompson for Gerald Wallace in addition to draft and cash considerations for the Sixers.
The Sacramento Kings offloaded Thompson earlier in the month as they looked to shed salary in pursuit of marquee free agents. The 29-year-old averaged 6.1 points and 6.5 rebounds a game in Sacramento last year.
Yahoo Sports' Marc J. Spears believes Thompson will have a role to play for the defending NBA champions:
Golden State could ask Thompson, in part, to fill the void left by David Lee, whom the Warriors sent to the Boston Celtics for Wallace.
It's doubtful Wallace will even see the floor for the Sixers. He played a total of 286 minutes for the Celtics last year, scoring 35 points. Philadelphia has little reason to play an aging veteran considering where it is in its rebuild.
Should the 76ers waive Wallace, NBA.com's John Schuhmann noted how much dead money will be on Philly's books:
In a sense, Golden State paid next to nothing in order to add a veteran who averaged nearly 10 boards per 36 minutes last year, per Basketball-Reference.com.
Even if he hardly sees the floor next year, Thompson will at least provide much more value to the Warriors than Wallace would have.
