Brendan Haywood Released by Trail Blazers: Latest Details and Reaction
As expected, Brendan Haywood's time with the Portland Trail Blazers was brief. The team announced it waived the 35-year-old big man Thursday.
The Blazers acquired Haywood, Mike Miller and two future second-round picks from the Cleveland Cavaliers last week. ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst reported at the time Portland would likely waste little time parting ways with both players.
Portland had incentive to waive Haywood as quickly as possible since the roughly $10.5 million he's set to earn for 2015-16 becomes guaranteed on Saturday. Instead, none of that will count against the cap for the Blazers.
As the Oregonian's Mike Tokito joked, any Haywood/Blazers apparel has already become a bit of a collector's item:
This could be the end of the road for Haywood. He missed the 2013-14 season with a stress fracture in his foot and played 121 total minutes for the Cavs between the regular season and playoffs. In terms of on-court value, he brings little to an NBA team.
If anything, a playoff contender could sign Haywood for something like the veteran's minimum. He has plenty of postseason experience—including an NBA title in 2011 with the Dallas Mavericks—which might make him attractive for teams looking for a strong locker room presence.
