Jonathan Kuminga's Top NBA Landing Spots After Trae Young Traded to Wizards From Hawks
The first major trade of the NBA season happened Wednesday when ESPN's Shams Charania reported the Atlanta Hawks moved Trae Young to the Washington Wizards for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert.
With the Feb. 5 trade deadline looming, attention naturally turns to who is next to be traded.
Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga is a potential candidate considering he has been included in trade rumors since before the season even started.
With that in mind, here is a list of some potential landing spots.
- Sacramento Kings
- Chicago Bulls
- Dallas Mavericks
Kuminga was on the Kings' radar this offseason when his future with the Warriors was very much in doubt and before he stayed with Golden State on a two-year, $46.8 million contract.
ESPN's Anthony Slater reported Wednesday that Sacramento visited the forward this summer and that "there remains mutual interest."
With the 23-year-old now largely out of Warriors head coach Steve Kerr's rotation, the immediate future seems like an ideal time for Sacramento to act on that "mutual interest."
It would also offer Kuminga an opportunity to play a more significant role.
So would Chicago, which needs to add young talent around guard Josh Giddey and wing Matas Buzelis as it looks toward the future. Perhaps Kuminga would thrive with a change of scenery and players who are more on his timeline, as opposed to the veteran-laden roster of the Warriors.
The Bulls may not be a true contender this season, but adding Kuminga to their group of young players and seeing how it works the rest of the way could help the front office assess whether the fit works and adjust accordingly during the offseason.
As for the Mavericks, everything is about building around rookie Cooper Flagg.
Kuminga is a young playmaker who would be on the Duke product's timeline and someone who can slash into the lane and take advantage of the spacing created when Flagg draws additional defenders.
While Dallas is in something of an awkward situation with veterans such as Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving (once he returns) on the roster with Flagg, the rookie is the future.
And Kuminga could be a solid supporting cast player alongside Flagg for years to come if he finally lived up to his potential in Dallas.
