Lucas Matthysse vs. Viktor Postol Announced: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction
Lucas Matthysse has been confirmed to take on undefeated Ukrainian superstar Viktor Postol for the vacant WBC World Super Lightweight Championship on Saturday, October 3—at the StubHub Centre in Carson, California.
The Golden Boy Promotions event pits two of the best talents in the division against one another after Postol was made the mandatory challenger after Danny Garcia relinquished the title, per BoxingNews24.com.
Former WBC Interim Super Lightweight champion Matthysse earned his shot at the belt after defeating Ruslan Provodnikov and will now square off against Postol.

Argentinian Matthysse was in a buoyant mood after the details were announced, per Boxing247.com, and proclaimed he fully expects to become the champion in the marquee fight:
"Postol isn’t anything big; he boxes well but that’s it. I saw part of his fight against Selcuk Aydin but other than that there aren’t very many videos of him on the Internet. I’m not taking him lightly though, because he’s at the top of the rankings for a reason.
Postol is tall like John Molina, but Molina came to fight. Postol, I don’t think so. He moves his left very well, fights at a distance, seems fast on his feet, and has excellent head movement. Against Aydin he got off to a slow start but then dominated and got the knockout. He’s good, but I’m confident that I’ll be the WBC World Champion.
"
Postol was equally as excited about the news and also talked up his chances after highlighting his long climb to the top of the division, per Boxing247:
"I am glad that I am finally getting my chance to fight for the WBC world title after all those hurdles and delays. To get to this fight I had to go through six years of hard work and dedication in the gym and in the ring. I am ready mentally and physically to win this fight and bring the world title back to the Ukraine!
"
Thirty-two-year-old Matthysse is ranked No. 3 in the world, per BoxRec.com, and has just three defeats to his name in his 11-year professional career.
However, "The Iceman" Postol enters October's fight with a perfect record—undefeated in 27 fights, encompassing 200 rounds of boxing, per BoxRec.
Legendary fighter and promoter Oscar De La Hoya tipped the Argentinian to come out on top against his rival and spoke about the quality he has produced in the ring in recent times, per Boxing247:
"Lucas was the winning half of the 2014 fight of the year and once again came out on top of what nearly everyone considers the 2015 fight of the year—if fans want action, they know where they’re going to get it on Saturday, October 3. Lucas knows that a victory here would not only earn him the WBC World Super Lightweight Belt but would establish him as the clear top fighter in the division. With so much opportunity, I fully expect he’ll put on a dynamite show at StubHub Center.
"
Matthysse has the dynamite style all fight fans love, but the experienced Postol is not known as the Iceman for no reason. He will look to control his bombastic opponent as he attempts to attack, with the fight making a great stylistic clash.
De La Hoya sees Matthysse as a fans favourite, and the kind of boxer who can move the division forward, but Postol's superior height and physicality could be the deciding factor when the two clash.
However, with La Maquina finishing 83 percent of his fights by knockout, per BoxRec, there is every chance we will see an explosive end to this world title battle.
