Twitter Mocks Wayne Rooney for His Childlike Handwriting

Ryan BaileyJul 30, 2015

Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States reached its conclusion on Wednesday night with a 2-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in Chicago. The match didn't go to plan for the Red Devils, but Wayne Rooney was gracious enough to tweet out a message of thanks to supporters in his host country:

What appeared to be a nice gesture, however, soon became a source of mockery when fans around the world teased Roo for his penmanship. Some of the replies and responses to the tweet were quite amusing:

One Twitter user had a theory about Rooney's writing technique and his rather original use of a stylus:

More than a few commenters inquired as to whether the Red Devils star was farming out social media duties to his children:

Some believed Rooney might have some kind of Superstition, so he took the Higher Ground and had a friend Sign, Seal and Deliver the tweet:

By this point, the handwriting jokes were getting a little long in the tooth, but that didn't stop Rooney's detractors from getting mouthy:

Many of Rooney's followers took the opportunity to parlay the handwriting conversation into some wider and more damning professional criticism:

And, inevitably, some fans failed to see the irony of mocking a childish picture with very childish insults:

Amid all the chaos and insults, there came the voice of reason. Rooney had just played a game, he was probably tired and it definitely isn't easy to write legibly on the screen of a smartphone:

Evidently, we can deduce that the good folks of Twitter are a little unsympathetic to the struggles of writing a nice message on a phone screen. We can also deduce that the people behind FootballFanCast.com can see into the future, if this tweet from March 2015 is anything to go by:

Yes, that is Rooney's son signing an autograph at a game. And yes, football will eat itself very soon.
