Bryce Underwood Announces Return to Michigan After Whittingham Replaces Sherrone Moore
First-year Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham won't have to find a new starting quarterback for his initial season with the Wolverines.
That is because Bryce Underwood announced Monday he will return for his sophomore season during the 2026 campaign:
The reveal comes after the football program hinted at big news to come earlier in the day:
Underwood's return is a welcome development for Michigan considering the turmoil it has experienced since losing to rival Ohio State to finish its regular season.
Head coach Sherrone Moore was fired, the team lost its bowl game to Texas and a number of players have entered the transfer portal amid the staff changes. That list of players transferring includes backup quarterbacks Jadyn Davis and Davis Warren, starting defensive back Zeke Berry, starting offensive tackle Andrew Sprague, and starting wide receiver Semaj Morgan.
Some roster upheaval given Moore's sudden firing was expected, but keeping Underwood within the program was the most important development in terms of roster building for the Wolverines all offseason.
He arrived at Michigan with no shortage of hype as a 5-star prospect and the No. 1 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.
While he was inconsistent throughout his freshman campaign and didn't fully live up to those expectations, he was also a first-time starter and just 18 years old.
Some growing pains were to be expected, and he finished the season completing 60.3 percent of his passes for 2,428 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions while adding 392 yards and six scores on the ground.
It would be anything but a surprise if he made a significant leap in his sophomore season, especially now that he has an entire year of starting experience.
And Michigan fans can now take solace knowing that leap will happen within the program.
