Oregon's Dominant Defense Impresses CFB Fans After Beating Texas Tech in CFP Bracket
In a game between two of the top offenses in the nation, the College Football Playoff quarterfinal between No. 5 Oregon and No. 4 Texas Tech at the Capital One Orange Bowl turned out to be a defensive struggle on New Year's Day.
In the end, the Ducks outlasted the Red Raiders with a 23-0 victory to advance to the CFP semifinals. Oregon put on a clinic on defense with four turnovers in the win, three of which belonged to true freshman cornerback Brandon Finney Jr., with two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Entering Thursday's game, Texas Tech ranked fifth in the nation with 480.3 total yards per game and second with 42.5 points per game. However, it was clear early on that the Red Raiders weren't in sync on offense.
Texas Tech opened the game with back-to-back three-and-outs before Finney recorded the first of his two interceptions off quarterback Behren Morton. The Red Raiders' defense did its best to slow down the Ducks, limiting them to just six points in the first half. However, a strip sack by Matayo Uiagalelei set up Oregon deep in Texas Tech territory, and running back Jordon Davison punched it in on the very next play for the game's first touchdown.
Fans on social media were impressed by Oregon's performance on defense as the team shut down the high-powered Texas Tech offense on its way to victory:
Teams playing in the College Football Playoff following a first-round bye are now 0-6 following Texas Tech's loss. However, that trend won't overshadow the immaculate showing by Oregon's defense on Thursday.
If the Ducks can continue to bring the fire on both sides of the ball, they will have a strong chance to win their first outright national championship.
Oregon will face the winner of No. 9 Alabama vs. No. 1 Indiana in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Jan. 9.
