Chelsea announced Thursday that the club and head coach Enzo Maresca mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately.
Maresca has been linked to the Manchester City head coaching position, with The Athletic's David Ornstein reporting last month that Maresca is "high among the candidates" to replace Pep Guardiola at Man City should Guardiola leave at the conclusion of the 2025-26 English Premier League season.
On Thursday, Ornstein and Simon Johnson of The Athletic reported that Maresca informed Chelsea "twice in late October and again in mid-December" that he had discussions with Manchester City officials about their head coaching position in the event it becomes available.
Simon Johnson of The Athletic previously reported that Rosenior was the "leading contender" to replace Maresca at Chelsea.
Chelsea have posted two draws and one loss in their past three matches, including a 2-2 draw with 15th-place Bournemouth in their most recent outing on Tuesday.
Overall, the Blues are fifth in the Premier League table with 31 points on eight wins, seven draws and five losses, putting them well behind first-place Arsenal with 48 points.
Maresca took over as Chelsea's head coach in 2024, and while they enjoyed some successes together, including winning the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and 2024-25 UEFA Conference League, they have found it difficult to truly vie for the Premier League crown.
Chelsea finished fourth last season, 15 points behind league-winning Liverpool, and they are once again 15 points off the pace this season.
The Blues have not won an Premier League title since 2017, and while they have improved since an embarrassing 12th-place finish in 2023, they have not re-established themselves as a truly elite club.
As part of the statement regarding Maresca's departure, Chelsea wrote, "With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track."
Per Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian, Chelsea felt "deep dissatisfaction" over some of Maresca's in-game decisions, but things broke down even more last month when Maresca told reporters he had experienced his "worst 48 hours" at the club following a win over Everton.
While things ultimately didn't work out for Maresca at Chelsea, all signs point toward him being Guardiola's successor at Manchester City if Guardiola decides to step away.
Ornstein reported last month that there is "growing anticipation" the 2025-26 season will be Guardiola's last at City.
Maresca has Manchester City ties after serving as their under-23 team head coach from 2020 to 2021, and as an assistant under Guardiola with the senior team from 2022 to 2023.
Ornstein noted that Maresca still "retains admirers in the hierarchy" at Manchester City as a result.
