San Francisco Marathon 2015 Results: Men's and Women's Top Finishers

Tyler ConwayJul 26, 2015

Local runner Chris Mocko made the best of his home track Sunday, pulling away from the field to take the 2015 San Francisco Marathon in an unofficial time of 2:26:21.

“Oh my gosh, it was so hilly,” Mocko said, per Steve Rubenstein of the San Francisco Gate. “It was a brutal first half. I was all ready to take a break at the halfway point on the massage tables. But I didn’t. Now I have to go and find the beer garden.”

Mocko is a veteran on the California marathon scene. He is a three-time winner at Napa Valley, adding his most recent crown earlier this year. Benjamin Eversole came in second with a time of 2:29:13. Jorge Maravilla, who seemed destined for second place before veering off course, was third, 16 seconds behind Eversole. The 37-year-old Maravilla seemed frustrated with the organization of the event after the race, citing a lack of structure.

“I’d say these organizers still have some work to do,” he said, per Rubenstein. “There was absolutely no one there to tell us which way to go. No volunteers, nothing.”

Maravilla's wrong turn nearly led to a scary situation, as he ran into the runners competing in the 5K.

Anna Bretan came away with the victory on the women's side. She came in with a time of 2:49:41, though she wasn't happy, as she was battling through an injury.

“I’ve run faster,” Bretan told Rubenstein. “This year my right leg wasn’t cooperating. It just came along for the ride.”

Devon Yanko was nearly seven minutes behind Bretan in second place. Joanna Reyes came in third, posting a time of 3:00:49.

Like Mocko, Bretan is becoming quite the star in California. She won the Modesto Marathon earlier this year and took the race's overall championship in 2013. She has now won the San Francisco Marathon each of the last three years as well.

The San Francisco Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon and is also a qualifier for the USA Olympic Team trials.

“The new designation elevates The San Francisco Marathon’s level of competition, attracting top competitive runners and starting a journey that race spectators can follow through to the Olympic Team Trials and beyond,” San Francisco Marathon director of marketing Michelle LaFrance said, per Molly Martinez of KRON4.com “It is an honor for San Francisco to be a city where Olympic dreams can be realized.”

Given the increased prominence of the San Francisco Marathon, it'll be interesting to see if it ascends to a status of more national clout. Either way, Mocko and Bretan appear satisfied with dominating their Californian competition.
