Which Group Is the Group of Death for 2026 World Cup? Predicting Winner of Group Stage

Joe TanseyDec 5, 2025

Two of the greatest goal-scorers of their generation were drawn together in Group I for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Kylian Mbappe and France, Erling Haaland and Norway and Senegal were drawn into the "Group of Death" alongside the winner of an intercontinental playoff.

Group I appears to be the toughest in the 48-team field because it puts a perennial World Cup contender, the 19th-ranked team in the world and the top team from Pot 3 with one of the most prolific scorers into one group.

Group Schedule

Matchday 1 (June 16): France vs. Senegal, Norway vs. IC Playoff Winner 2

Matchday 2 (June 22): France vs. IC Playoff Winner 2, Norway vs. Senegal

Matchday 3 (June 26): Norway vs. France, Senegal vs. IC Playoff Winner 2

France will be viewed as the favorite to win Group I, even though it has a tougher path to the 32-team knockout round than other World Cup favorites.

Mbappe and Co. won five of their six UEFA World Cup qualifying matches. They scored 16 goals and posted a +12 goal differential in those contests.

Mbappe scored five goals in qualification. He will be the main target of the opposing defensive game plans, but he isn't the only attacker in the Les Bleus squad that can hurt defenses.

Bayern Munich's Michael Olise, Inter's Marcus Thuram, Crystal Palace's Jean Philippe Mateta and PSG's Bradley Barcola are just a few of the notable names Didier Deschamps can call in for the World Cup.

Senegal might provide the biggest defensive test to France and Norway with their big-name strikers up top. Senegal conceded on just three occasions in CAF World Cup qualifying.

The Lions of Teranga boast a strong attacking lineup that put up 22 goals in World Cup qualifying. Sadio Mane, now with Al-Nassr, is the leading scorer in the squad. Bayern's Nicolas Jackson will be a force to be reckoned with in the final third as well.

Norway possesses the obvious threat of Haaland in front of goal. The Manchester City striker netted 16 goals in UEFA World Cup qualifying.

Haaland scored most of those goals against the lower-ranked teams in his qualifying group, but he did finish qualification with a two-goal performance against Italy.

Norway's defensive record was as impressive as France and Senegal because it conceded just five times and held Italy to to a single goal in 180 minutes.

All three teams are capable of reaching the round of 32 because the eight-best third-place teams move on to the knockout round.

Iraq is the biggest threat to all three teams to come out of Intercontinental Playoff 2. It only needs to win one game against the Bolivia-Suriname winner to qualify for the World Cup in March.

However, Iraq will likely struggle to keep up with the attacking prowess across the other three rosters.

Expect some incredible 1v1 battles in the games between France, Senegal and Norway. Iraq might turn into the team that the other three must earn three points against to advance to the knockout round.

France is the group favorite until proven otherwise, but do not expect a blowout in any of the notable games.
