Friday afternoon in the nation's capital, the path to the 2026 World Cup will become clearer for 42 of the 48 teams competing in this year's extravaganza.

The teams already determined to appear in the tournament will find out the pathways they will take to earn the highest honor in soccer, including host countries the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

World Cup teams are divided into four pots, with host countries the United States, Mexico, and Canada appearing in Pot 1. The rest of the teams, according to the men's world ranking, are allocated to the rest of the pots.

The two FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament placeholders and four European playoff placeholders, will round out the fourth pot.

The pots are as follows:

  • Pot 1: Canada, Mexico, United States, Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany
  • Pot 2: Croatia, Morocco, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Japan, Senegal, IR Iran, Korean Republic, Ecuador, Austria, Australia
  • Pot 3: Norway, Panama, Egypt, Algeria, Scotland, Paraguay, Tunisia, Côte d'Ivoire, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa
  • Pot 4: Jordan, Cabo Verde, Ghana, Curaçao, Haiti, New Zealand, European Play-Off A, B, C and D, FIFA Play-Off Tournament 1 and 2
  • The teams competing for the three European Play-Off spots include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, Denmark, Italy, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, North Macedonia, Poland, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Türkiye, Ukraine, and Wales.

    The six teams competing for the two FIFA Play-Off Tournament spots are Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname.

    Teams from each each pot will be drawn into groups A to L, beginning with Pot 1.

    To ensure competitive balance, the four highest-ranked teams (Spain, Argentina, France, and England) will be drawn into opposite pathways. "This guarantees the two highest-ranked teams will not meet before the finals," wrote the official FIFA website.
