Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Edinson Cavani, Lucas Biglia Rumours
The transfer rumour mill continues to link Edinson Cavani with a move toward Manchester United, despite the player's insistence that he has no intention of leaving Paris Saint-Germain during the summer of 2015.
The Sun (h/t the Daily Star's Jack Wilson) once again reports the Uruguay international is “desperate” to come to Old Trafford:
"Edinson Cavani wants to complete a stunning move to Manchester United.
The Paris St-Germain striker, 28, is desperate to answer United's striking SOS.
Louis van Gaal has just one senior fit frontman in his squad - Wayne Rooney.
"
The report comes just days after Cavani's agent told Journal du Dimanche (h/t Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson) that his client―and half-brother―is perfectly happy in the French capital:
Cavani has been a popular name in transfer rumours since moving to PSG from Napoli, as he is often pushed out of his preferred central position to make room for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The two have found a way to coexist, but there are still times when it's painfully obvious Cavani is a traditional central striker rather than a winger. His biggest strengths are his raw power inside the box and ability to finish in the air. He lacks the blistering pace to really be a force out wide and really should be playing closer to goal.
United have enjoyed a phenomenal transfer window so far, bringing in the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian, and Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe deservedly applauded the club for the fine work they've done so far:
The one position where they've yet to make a big splash is up front, where both Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie departed the club.
Wayne Rooney will likely be the starter, with James Wilson possibly providing depth. The youngster is supremely talented but showed last season that he needs more seasoning before he can make an impact at the Premier League level.
Cavani looks like the ideal addition to the club, but he remains unlikely to leave PSG anytime soon.
Ibrahimovic has one year left on his current deal, and he told ESPN FC's Julien Laurens that he's likely to leave the club at the end of the 2015-16 season. “I have a contract until 2016. I will be 34 next season and I don't see myself continuing to play at the top level after that,” he said.
PSG know this―in fact, they've known this for a long time, as Ibrahimovic confirmed his retirement plans last summer.
The French champions are unlikely to sell Cavani knowing Ibrahimovic won't stick around for much longer, and Cavani knows that he's set to become the unquestioned leader of Les Parisiens' attack.
Perhaps last year, when it was unclear whether Ibrahimovic would continue his career with PSG beyond 2016, a move was a more realistic option. Right now, people should believe it when Cavani and his agent say they have no intention of leaving the club at this particular time.
Red Devils Preparing Lucas Biglia Bid?

According to the Daily Express' Joe Short, United are preparing a £17.7 million offer for yet another central midfielder, this time Lazio's Lucas Biglia. The Italians are reportedly already preparing for life without the Argentina international, as they've identified a replacement:
"The Rome club are keen to keep 29-year-old Biglia but it is understood they are realistic about their prospects of fending off United.
A £17.7million bid is understood to be in the pipeline, with United manager Louis van Gaal keen to land one more recruit before the season starts.
And Lazio have readied themselves for the exit by jumping ahead of Fiorentina in the race for Genk's Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
"
The news is a little curious, to put it lightly. Earlier this week, Corriere dello Sport (h/t calciomercato.it) reported Lazio had turned down a €25 million offer—which converts to roughly £17.7 million—for Biglia.
Biglia is an excellent veteran midfielder who excels as a ball-winner, and he's the kind of addition fans should be excited about in any other year. But Van Gaal just splashed the cash to bring Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger to the club, and with Ander Herrera also in the squad, where exactly is Biglia going to play?
The Argentinian has spent the bulk of his career playing below the top level and only made his international debut after several seasons in Belgium with Anderlecht. He's an underrated player who would thrive playing for an elite club, but he won't be pushing Schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger for the starting position.
This is a move that could have happened four weeks ago, but it makes very little sense at this point in time.
