Deion Sanders Says He's 'Built' to Fix Colorado Football After Posting 3-9 Record
Deion Sanders indicated after Colorado's 2025 season ended Saturday with a 24-14 road loss to Kansas State that he plans to return for a fourth year with the program.
"If anyone's built to reconcile, and to get this back on course, it's me," Sanders told reporters. "And I will do it if it's the last thing I do on Earth. Trust me when I tell you, this was the Last Supper."
After earning a 9-4 record and making a bowl game appearance with a team led by Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter in 2024, Colorado's record dropped to 3-9 this season.
Colorado hired Deion away from Jackson State in December 2022 after a 1-11 finish to the 2022 season.
After bringing some of his top players with him, Sanders led the Buffaloes to a 4-8 record in 2023 followed by a nine-win campaign the next season.
That record was enough to earn Sanders a five-year, $54 million contract extension in March to bring his contract through the 2029 season, according to ESPN's Heather Dinich.
Sanders has dealt with multiple health issues since the end of the 2024 season, including a cancer diagnosis that led to bladder removal surgery last spring and surgery to address blood clotting in October.
He declined in late October to speak about how health concerns could impact his future as a college coach.
The Buffaloes have now ended the 2025 season on a five-game losing streak while losing multiple top recruits from the incoming class.
After Colorado's blowout loss to Arizona State on Nov. 22, Sanders told reporters there would be changes with the program going forward.
"I'm gonna say it's multiple things that will need to change, and it will," Sanders said (h/t CBS Sports' Brad Crawford).
Sanders acknowledged later that week that Colorado had "missed" on their transfer portal class, in part because he was absent for part of the offseason due to health issues.
"I know how to get it right. I'll get it right," Sanders said (h/t the Colorado Springs Gazette's Tyler King). "We're headed in the right direction. Some things happened, and we took a quick left instead of staying right, but I know how to get it right and we will... Sometimes you just need to recalibrate, you need to reset, you need to get a redo. We need a reset right now."
Sanders' postgame comments Saturday are another indication the 58-year-old coach plans to stick around and rebuild the Buffaloes, potentially starting with the opening of the transfer portal on Jan. 2.
