Ricochet, Kyle O'Reilly, Real Winners and Losers of AEW Full Gear Match Card
The seventh edition of All Elite Wrestling's Full Gear pay-per-view returned to Newark, New Jersey for the second year in a row.
Much like every AEW PPV, the card was stacked with title bouts, grudge matches and fights with special stipulations.
Tony Khan has also added a new title to the mix with the AEW National Championship, which saw the first titleholder crowned following a Casino Gauntlet match.
Let's take a look at some of the real winners and losers from Saturday's festivities.
Pre-Show
1 of 9Winners: Bang Bang Gang
The Tailgate Brawl pre-show began with a four-way tag match that included a $200,000 cash prize for the winners. Austin Gunn and Juice Robinson managed to best Big Bill, Bryan Keith, Anthony Bowens, Max Caster and The Outrunners to claim the victory and the purse.
The Bang Bang Gang hasn't seen much success in recent months, so it was great to see them pick up a win on a PPV. Once Colten Gunn is back, they should be thrown right into the Trios Championship scene.
Losers: Caster and Bowens
The tag team formerly known as The Acclaimed has been on an up and down roller coaster ride in recent months, and it looks like AEW might not know exactly where that ride is going to end.
The $200k bout felt like a match designed for them to win in order to give them more reasons to keep teaming together, but instead, they left with another loss on their record. How their story moves forward from here will be interesting to see.
Winners: QT Marshall and Big Boom AJ
Former rivals turned partners when QT Marshall and The Costco Guy teamed up to take on RPG Vice. This was a comedy match designed solely to entertain. Nobody went into this expecting a five-star performance.
Not only did this gave AJ another win in AEW, but it gave Marshall a spotlight, which is something he doesn't get nearly enough.
Losers: The Workhorsemen
Anthony Henry and JD Drake got a big opportunity when they were booked to fight Hook and Eddie Kingston on the pre-show, but it all fell apart for them immediately.
Hook and Kingston got the win in just a couple of minutes, making it one of the faster AEW bouts on any PPV or pre-show this year. It's great to see Hook and Eddie being pushed, but The Workhorsemen have been underused and undervalued for far too long.
Losers: Anyone who didn't buy the PPV
The final pre-show match for the CMLL trios titles got started with just a few minutes left in the pre-show, so anyone who was watching the free broadcast that did not purchase Full Gear did not get to see how the match ended.
This is the second PPV AEW has done this with in a row, and while it creates the impression that matches are not scheduled and can go past the expected end time, it also feels like people who expected to see the four advertised matches for free got the short end of the stick.
Loser: Darby Allin
2 of 9
This week, Pac challenged Darby Allin to a match without any special stupulations so they could finally prove who was better once and for all.
Unfortunately for Allin, The Bastard went back on his word and had Wheeler Yuta interfere by placing Sting's bat in the ring for him to use on Allin, which is what led to Pac's victory.
In the long run, Allin won't lose much momentum from this, if any. He didn't lose clean, so he can continue chasing The Death Riders with a renewed vigor.
As for Pac, just getting a singles win on a PPV feels long overdue for him, so it was nice to end this one with his hand raised.
Winners: Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa
3 of 9
Four tag teams competed in a match at Full Gear to determine which duo would get to pick their own stipulation in their semifinal match in the tournament to crown the first set of women's tag team champions.
Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa, Megan Bayne and Marina Shafir, Skye Blue and Julia Hart, and Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron made up the field of competitors.
All four teams looked great in this match because they were all allowed time to shine and use some unique double-team moves, but only one duo could get the win.
The Timeless Love Bombs were able to secure the victory when Storm rolled Cameron into a cradle for the pin. It felt like Storm might be a little directionless once she was out of the main event scene, but it feels like she has found exactly what she needed by teaming with Shirakawa.
Winners: FTR
4 of 9Saturday night, Bandido and Brody King put the AEW men's tag titles on the line against Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood.
Both teams brought their A-game and put on a great show, but when the dust settled, FTR scored the win to begin their third reign as the tag team champions in AEW.
While Brodido has done a great job with the titles, it never felt like their reign would last very long. They were a team thrown together randomly, so it makes more sense to put the belts back on an established duo again.
FTR continues to be one of the most consistent and talented duos in all of pro wrestling, so it should be a fun ride with Stokely Hathaway in their corner.
Winner: Ricochet
5 of 9
Not only did Ricochet turn in a great performance at Full Gear, but he left the PPV as the inaugural AEW national champion.
The high-flyer had to contend with several big players like Claudio Castagnoli, Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin, Mark Davis, both members of JetSpeed and Orange Cassidy.
This win cements Ricochet as one of the top heels in AEW, and using The Gates of Agony to help him win drove how what a cohesive unit they have become.
Up to this point in the show, this was the most entertaining contest. Everyone put on a great show and had the crowd on the edge of its seat waiting to see who would win.
Winner: Kyle O'Reilly
6 of 9
Throughout his time in Ring of Honor, WWE and most of his time in AEW, Kyle O'Reilly has primarily been known as a tag team wrestler.
Everyone has always known how good he is, but he was always booked in teams and stables. That all changed Saturday night when he faced Jon Moxley in what could be his biggest singles match of his career.
KOR has been on a roll in AEW lately, and he even made Mox tap out recently, so whether he won or lost the match, he was going to leave Full Gear in a better place because he was able to show the world what he can do on his own.
The No Holds Barred nature of this bout led to lots of blood being spilled thanks to the use of a few weapons. Even with a crimson mask, KOR never relented.
The fact that O'Reilly made Moxley tap out in the middle of the ring was the best possible outcome for him in this one. From this point forward, nobody should be calling him just a tag team wrestler anymore.
If you are a fan of O'Reilly, seeing him win and get the nod of respect from Moxley probably had you smiling from ear to ear.
Winner: Mark Briscoe, Losers: People With Blood Phobia
7 of 9
Mark Briscoe not only had a chance to win the TNT Championship at Full Gear, but he was also fighting to keep himself out of the Don Callis Family. If he lost, he would be forced to join them and do Callis' bidding.
Thankfully for all of us, that did not happen. After a long and brutal fight that saw both men take quite a few big bumps, Briscoe emerged as the new TNT champion.
If you don't count ROH, this is Briscoe's first singles title in AEW. It was a great night for fans of The Chicken, unless you have a problem with blood.
With tacks, barbed wire tables and even a screwdriver in play, there was no shortage of blood left on the mat after this one. It may be too violent for some, but if you don't mind that kind of action, this is a must-see match.
Winner: Kenny Omega, Loser: Don Callis
8 of 9
The Young Bucks and Josh Alexander were able to claim victory and the million-dollar prize on Saturday, but the night did not end with them joining the Don Callis Family as expected.
As the rest of the family was attacking Kenny Omega, Jack Perry and Luchasaurus, the Bucks had a change of heart and ran to the ring to help clear the Callis minions out.
It was an emotional moment for fans of The Elite as Nick and Matt Jackson extended their hands to Omega in a show of peace. Rather than shake their hands, The Cleaner gave them a big hug.
The heels won the match, but The Elite reuniting is what fans will remember most about what happened here.
Loser: Adam Page, Winner: Swerve Strickland
9 of 9
The night closed with Adam Page defending the men's world title inside a steel cage against Samoa Joe.
It was a bloody fight that saw others get involved along the way, but nobody could have predicted how it would end.
Hook came down in what appeared to be an effort to wake up a downed ref to help Page get the win, but then he turned on Hangman and revealed he was back in The Opps by helping Samoa Joe win the world title.
However, Joe's celebration was cut short by the return of Swerve Strickland. The former world champion has had issues with Page before, but he ended up being his protector on Saturday.
Swerve proceeded to take out all of Joe's minions as the new champion retreated up the ramp. It looks like Joe already has someone new eyeing the belt he just won.
Full Gear was another great PPV for AEW with a couple of genuinely surprising moments. It will be fun to watch the fallout on Dynamite next week.
