Mikaela Shiffrin Extends Record With Historic Slalom Win Ahead of 2026 Olympics
Mikaela Shiffrin secured the 102nd FIS Alpine Ski World Cup victory of her career Saturday, winning the slalom in Finnish Lapland.
Shiffrin, 30, was already the all-time record holder in career World Cup wins, and she extended it Saturday, giving her 20 more than fellow American Lindsey Vonn, who is second on the all-time women's list with 82.
Nobody came close to touching Shiffrin's winning time Saturday, as she beat second-place finisher Lara Colturi of Albania by 1.66 seconds.
Shiffrin now has 65 career slalom wins, which is also a record, and 30 more than former Austrian skier Marlies Schild, who is second on the list.
Speaking to reporters following Saturday's race, Shiffrin described her performance and her mindset throughout.
"It's for sure a good feeling. It was so nice to race today. I felt really strong on both runs," Shiffrin said. "I was just feeling like, 'Oh, don't mess it up, like it would be embarrassing, kind of.' But then, in the end, if you are pushing as hard as you can, you can't mess it up."
Saturday marked the start of the 2026 slalom season leading up to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, this coming February.
Shiffrin is a three-time Olympic medalist, winning gold in the slalom in 2014, gold in the giant slalom in 2018 and silver in the combined in 2018.
At the last Winter Olympics in 2022, Shiffrin struggled mightily despite being favored to win multiple medals. Despite competing in six events, Shiffrin left Beijing without a medal.
Shiffrin has bounced back since then, though, winning the World Cup giant slalom title in 2023, the World Cup slalom title in 2023 and 2024, and the World Cup overall title in 2023.
She also won World Championship gold in the giant slalom in 2023 and the team combined in 2025.
Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Shiffrin has stated she intends to focus on the slalom and giant slalom in 2026, although she didn't rule out running some super-G races as well.
Her lead up to the 2026 Winter Olympics is off to a spectacular start, as Shiffrin now has a slalom title to go along with her fourth-place finish in the giant slalom a few weeks ago in Austria.
