Preview
Even though there is no clear-cut favorite to win the World Cup at this point, teams like France, Spain, Brazil, England and Argentina all look to be a slight cut above the rest of the field.
Portugal is right behind that group and could be a sentimental favorite with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving no doubt that the 2026 World Cup will be his last.
France and Argentina have been two of the most dominant countries in the tournament dating back to 2014. At least one of them has been in the final in each of the last three World Cups, including a memorable head-to-head match in 2022 that Argentina won 4-2 on penalty kicks.
The Spanish squad looks poised to improve on their run from four years ago that ended with a loss to Morocco in the round of 16. Rodri is slowly working his way back into peak shape with Manchester City after tearing his ACL in September 2024.
If Spain has anything close to the peak version of Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner, to play with Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, there aren't many countries capable of matching that offense.
The two countries that could compete with that unit are France, with Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, and Brazil. The Brazilians have advanced to at least the quarterfinals in every World Cup since 1994.
Vinicius Junior and Richarlison will carry the Brazilian front line, with Marquinhos anchoring the defense for head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
