Eli Manning, Giants Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldSep 11, 2015

The New York Giants have rewarded franchise quarterback Eli Manning with what figures to be his final big payday.

Manning agreed to a new contract on Friday worth $84 million over four years, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirmed the deal, noting that it includes a full no-trade clause.

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News noted that Manning would be paid $68.5 million over the next three years and that the deal includes a $31 million signing bonus.

“This is where I got started and where I want to finish. I still have the same mentality," Manning said, per Michael Eisen of Giants.com. "My goal is to earn this contract and do my best and keep trying to win championships for the Giants.

Talk regarding an extension heated up in mid-August when Rapoport revealed that Manning wanted to be paid like the best signal-caller in the game, per NFL Media PR:

Because of that, the expectation was that it would take some time for the two sides to come to an agreement:

Many scoffed at the idea of Manning being paid more than Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, big brother Peyton Manning and others, but ESPN New York's Robin Lundberg pointed out that it's the nature of the beast in the modern-day NFL:

It's been quite a turbulent, adventurous tenure under center for Manning in the Big Apple. Amid relentless media scrutiny, a family legacy to uphold and numerous bouts with inconsistent play, the 34-year-old has endured and hasn't missed a game since his rookie year in 2004.

Although the G-Men have failed to advance to the postseason in the last three years, it's hard to bash Manning too much. Before that playoff dry spell, he led New York to a pair of Super Bowl victories.

Manning has had his low points, such as a 27-interception season in 2013. The vitriol has been palpable during Manning's struggles, as outsiders have often viewed his dull on-field countenance to be that of a milquetoast who doesn't appear fully invested in the game.

When it's clicked for Manning, though, he's delivered several of the most epic moments in Giants history. Orchestrating eight game-winning drives in the 2011 regular season and playoffs and a Super Bowl XLVI triumph over the New England Patriots was the stuff of legend.

The 2015 campaign will only be Manning's second year in a new offense under play-caller Ben McAdoo. Pro Football Focus highlighted how Manning embraced the system rather well en route to 4,410 passing yards and 30 touchdowns:

With the return of favorite target Victor Cruz and second-year receiver Odell Beckham Jr. emerging as a magnificent playmaker, Manning has adequate weapons to work with for the foreseeable future.

Prior to Manning signing his latest contract, Beckham expressed an eagerness to rally around him, per NFL Media PR"I'm going to follow that guy every single day because he knows what it takes to get there."

Even a quieter style of leadership from Manning seems to be making an impression. Usually, Manning lets his play do the talking, and his resume speaks for itself.

McAdoo's system is evidently more predicated on short passes, which should aid Manning's accuracy, protection and production toward the end of his career.

Given Manning's complicated but undeniably excellent legacy and the absence of a surefire QB of the future waiting in the wings, New York was wise to reaffirm its commitment to its longtime face of the franchise.
