British Open 2015 Leaderboard: Results and Top Moments from St. Andrews

Rory MarsdenJul 21, 2015

America's Zach Johnson triumphed in the 2015 British Open in a play-off on Monday after a riveting week of weather-affected action at the Old Course in St. Andrews.

He fought off South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen and Australia's Marc Leishman over four extra holes after the trio all ended on 15 under par after 72.

Jordan Spieth just missed out on the opportunity to complete the third leg of the Grand Slam as he finished one shot back in a tie for fourth.

Here's a look at the final leaderboard from the 114th Open and a recap of some of the final day's top moments.

Spieth Made his Move

Unsurprisingly, after he won the first two majors of the year, Spieth headed to Fife as the odds-on favourite to make it three from three.

He came mightily close, producing some stunning golf on the final day, but he fell just short in another impressive showing from the youngster.

Starting Monday in the penultimate group just one shot back, Spieth made a decent start before a double-bogey five on the eighth after a four-putt looked to have scuppered his chances.

Remarkably, however, he then shot consecutive birdies on the next two holes to repair the damage, per BBC Sport's Ben Smith:

The shot of the day came on the 16th, as the 21-year-old holed a huge birdie putt to tie for the lead at 15 under, and put himself in the driving seat for yet another major win, per the Open:

But as so often is the case on the Old Course, the 17th—the iconic Road Hole—proved Spieth's downfall as he could only make bogey.

Unable to birdie 18, and with Johnson and Leishman in the clubhouse at 15 under, Spieth's challenge was over, but he stayed in it all the way to the end and played his part in a thrilling conclusion.

Oosthuizen and Leishman Brilliant, Johnson Better

The winner in 2010 at St Andrews, Oosthuizen went out again in the final group on the final day in 2015. He played a steady round, always keeping himself in with a shout.

The true heroics came at the 18th, though. Having scrambled par on 16 and 17, he produced a fantastic shot into the 18th green to give himself the chance of joining Johnson and Leishman in the play-off, per Golf World:

Johnson and Leishman had both carded final-round 66s to head the leaderboard, but as the man still in rhythm, Oosthuizen looked the favourite heading into the play-off—played around 1, 2, 17 and 18.

As Johnson and the South African birdied the first with impressive putts under pressure, Leishman could only manage a five, and he was effectively out of it from there.

The 2007 Masters champion then made the significant move on two, when he holed another brilliant putt to move one ahead of Oosthuizen:

He nearly came a cropper on 17, but Oosthuizen's inability to two-putt from quite a distance saw all three make bogey, and Johnson headed to 18 one in front.

In fact, Oosthuizen's touch on the greens, so brilliant in the last few holes of his final round, deserted him somewhat.

Johnson made par on 18, with Oosthuizen needing a birdie to force sudden death. But the 2010 champ could not quite send it home, and he had to settle for second place.

Johnson was a truly deserving winner in the end after a fantastic week, not least because of his three on the 72nd hole, which prompted quite the celebration from his caddie, per Paddy Power:

The competition at the top of the leaderboard was fierce, as Jason Day tied with Spieth for fourth, the Aussie yet again just missing out on major glory.

The players will now focus on the last major of the year, the U.S. PGA, which starts at Whistling Straits on August 13.
