NBA Summer League 2015 Championship: Suns vs. Spurs Score and Twitter Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldJul 20, 2015

The San Antonio Spurs have several veterans in the twilight of their careers, but their future appears bright in light of their 93-90 NBA Summer League championship win over the Phoenix Suns on Monday.

Jonathan Simmons and Treveon Graham came off the bench to score 23 and 22 points, respectively. Summer League MVP Kyle Anderson paced the Spurs with a steady 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and no turnovers.

The league's official Twitter account even gave Anderson props for how he let the game come to him:

Anderson is nicknamed "Slo Mo" and acts as an analogous vessel for what tends to happen with regard to the Spurs. It is simple yet effective, smart and beautiful basketball that helps San Antonio achieve the desired result.

And yes, an occasional "wow" moment is the byproduct. Anderson provided one of those on the following behind-the-back pass, courtesy of SB Nation's Ricky O'Donnell:

Simmons was the title game's MVP for leading the charge in scoring. Fitting that a recent Spurs NBA Finals MVP was one of those who took notice of the team's achievement:

A 13-0 run from late in the third quarter to early in the fourth helped San Antonio pull away. After falling into a 23-15 hole late in the opening quarter, the Spurs came back to take the lead in the second. The game was tied at 49 at halftime before San Antonio's second-half surge.

Simmons' aerial acrobatics were particularly notable in helping the Spurs gain momentum. NBA TV captured one of his jams:

Sam Vecenie of CBSSports.com applauded the performance by electric Suns point guard Mike James, who led his squad with 32 points:

James nailed several shots late to at least make the end somewhat suspenseful, but the outcome was never truly in doubt due to San Antonio's lead, which grew to as much as 14. Although T.J. Warren (17), Archie Goodwin (12) and Devin Booker (10) all scored in double figures for Phoenix, they had six fouls apiece.

Summer ball tends to be a bit chaotic and sloppy—yet another testament to how impressive the Spurs' accomplishment is. A slew of players without any prior chemistry came together and worked to do what San Antonio is accustomed to doing: winning.

The Associated Press' Jon Krawczynski applauded the other subplot to this summer league that couldn't be ignored:

Hammon, who became the first female head coach in the NBA when she took the reins of the summer Spurs, proved she has the chops to hold her own, and she managed to find the right blend to keep the team on schedule with San Antonio's triumphant tradition.

Dan McCarney of the San Antonio Express-News and Ben Golliver of Sports Illustrated logged some of what Hammon said after the game:

It's not as though the Spurs can realistically expect all of its summer studs to contribute down the road. But this title in Las Vegas shows the organization's stability and how well it develops young talent.

No matter who sticks on San Antonio's roster in the future, the franchise figures to be in good hands. A positive trickle-down effect evidently carried over to Vegas for the Spurs, whose A team hopes to add a more significant championship once the dust settles on the 2015-16 campaign.
