NBA Summer League 2015 MVP: Kyle Anderson Wins Coveted Award
The San Antonio Spurs can't seem to do anything wrong as one of major sports' first-class organizations. Their eye for talent is particularly notable, as evident again in Kyle Anderson's taking home the NBA's Summer League MVP award Sunday.
An official release by the NBA announced the news of Anderson's accolade. San Antonio drafted Anderson No. 30 overall in the first round of last year's draft. Since the Spurs' entire championship nucleus was still in the fold, it was difficult for him to carve out playing time.
The former UCLA star has averaged 22 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals. Anderson led the Spurs to the summer league's title game in Sunday's 75-68 win over Atlanta in which he scored 22 points and pulled down eight boards.
BallIsLife.com logged what Anderson had to say about his style of play:
The Statesman's David Vertsberger hinted at how Anderson's emergence isn't good news for the Spurs' opponents:
Anderson is touted as a point forward who isn't the fleetest of foot but makes up for his lack of explosive athleticism with a high basketball IQ. This is the type of player who seems to fit the Spurs perfectly.
With Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili especially in line for retirement sooner than later, the time is coming for Anderson to step up if San Antonio is meant to stay among the NBA's elite. If this summer is any indication, he may be ready for a larger role with the A-team in 2015-16.
If Anderson can take on some ball-handling duties, he'll even take pressure off another aging veteran, Tony Parker. Whenever his time comes, the versatile 21-year-old figures to fit in somehow as part of a young nucleus that will feature Kawhi Leonard, Patty Mills and LaMarcus Aldridge in his prime.
