6 Reasons to Watch UFC on Fox 16

Dan HiergesellJul 20, 2015

Saturday will feature one of the most anticipated rematches in UFC history.

And depending on who you are, it may serve as one of the more intriguing rivalries of the past few years.

But besides the polarizing reboot of T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao, this weekend should deliver beyond the bantamweight title fight.

With No. 1 contender rights on the line in the women's bantamweight division and rising lightweights in search of a defining victory, the always-enticing free card will be a good watch from start to finish.

But in case you need more convincing, here are six reasons to tune in to UFC on Fox 16's main card and jam-packed prelims.

A Desperate Jim Miller

1 of 6

Perennial lightweight standout Jim Miller is as dangerous as it is.

But when you add in the fact that he has dropped two consecutive fights for the first time in his lengthy career, the 31-year-old should resemble that of an atom bomb this Saturday.

Top off Miller's bubbling concoction with a game opponent like Team Alpha Male's Danny Castillo (who is riding his own two-fight losing streak), and we may well have our odds-on favorite for Fight of the Night.

It's a terrific divisional meeting and one that is buried on an already stacked prelim card.

Filthy's Return to Action

2 of 6

The UFC light heavyweight division is arguably the shallowest roster in the sport.

While a long-awaited return by Tom Lawlor isn't going to set the weight class ablaze, his pre-fight antics and contagious personality are just what the doctor ordered.

It may be tough for Filthy to shake off more than two years of sideline work, but he's not really the type of fighter who relies on comfort and cohesiveness to brutalize his opponents.

His comeback trail will start this Saturday at UFC on Fox 16 opposite the ultra-skilled Gian Villante, who should gladly sit in the pocket and exchange with one of the more popular fighters around.

The Human Bonus Machine

3 of 6

Joe Lauzon's house is likely decorated with a wall of heads.

But unlike many hunters in it to win it, Lauzon's shrine consists of beaten foe from A to Z.

The Human Bonus Machine has made a living throughout his near-eight-year UFC career by capturing Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night awards like he was Meryl Streep at the Golden Globes (she has eight).

Needless to say, it's a momentous occasion every time Lauzon steps inside the cage. Saturday's must-win matchup opposite the infamous Takanori Gomi should be yet another blood-splattering performance for J-Lau.

The Irish Dragon

4 of 6

South Philadelphia's own Paul Felder has a real chance to transform into the next rising lightweight star when he takes on divisional standout Edson Barboza Saturday night.

Now while the Irish Dragon has utilized his blistering spinning strikes and timely combinations throughout his fairly short career en route to an undefeated 10-0 record, Barboza is unlike any other fighter he's ever encountered.

Equipped with some of the best kicks the UFC has ever seen, the Brazilian is one of the most dangerous stand-up artists in the sport.

It's going to be Felder's biggest test of his career as he attempts to leapfrog Junior and solidify himself as a bona fide contender at 155 pounds.

Cupcake vs. Evil

5 of 6

With some of the best all-around striking in the women's bantamweight division on top of her high-level ground game, Miesha "Cupcake" Tate is once again on the cusp of another UFC title shot.

The only obstacle standing in the former Strikeforce champion's way of another showdown with champion Ronda Rousey (assuming she gets past Bethe Correia at UFC 190 next month) is the always wild and unflappable Jessica Eye.

Eye is one of the more underrated entities at 135 pounds, but her appetite for punishment and violence will be put on full display when she meets the biggest test of her career this weekend.

The winner moves on to fight for the title, and the loser will be left to regain her divisional footing.

The Rematch

6 of 6

Pending successful weight cuts and a healthy last week of training, former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao will finally get his chance to regain his title from current kingpin T.J. Dillashaw.

It's been just 16 months since Dillashaw upset the Brazilian at UFC 173 by utilizing blazing footwork, quick combinations and an undeniable drive to win, which in turn ended Barao's illustrious 33-fight unbeaten streak.

Needless to say, this is one of the most anticipated rematches in recent memory, let alone for a division consistently overshadowed by bigger and stronger rosters.

This long-awaited encounter will either culminate in an exclamation mark on Dillashaw's first victory or a night of redemption for The Baron.
